The scandals dug up against Gen. Garfield require no refutation, and for his friend to undertake it, would only give them the enkr of truth mid respectability they now so lamentably lack. From I lie moment the scandals were origi mite I, (ien. Garfield has grown in popular favor among his own people. The great t,tate of Ohio, instead of questioning his integrity or in the leastdoubting his ability and capaci'y to serve its interests, lias enlarged its confidence by enlarikig his sphere of usefulness. There is no truer test of a public man's character than the fact that his own people stand by and continue to renew their confidence in him. If a vindication W'is at all necessary, this tact alone wojld supply it to every intelligent t.ur ni nded man in thecountrv. One point in this direction, Gen. (except Published every evening Jiunday) by the GENERAL NEWS. 21, 1880. SAMUEL W. RICHARDS addressed tho congregation. He desired the faith and prayer of the Saints that the spirit of the Lord might be with him. By the light of His inspiration every thought, every word, every deed should be prompted. The speaker said he was com-- . paratively a stranger, still the pur pose for which we all had come, should command attention. Religion is not of the same char&c ter as the laws made by states. They are of a narrow nature. The religion of Christ, however, is of a general, character. It is for each and every one. We must all letrn for ourselves, each one for himself individually. The gospel ef Jesus has an individual application to every one, not just to his or her neighbor. We must find out how far we can ma e the principles we hear applicable and beneficial to ourselves. Thee are reipiirenientsof the gospel which are to be fulfilled by each and every one, whereby great responsibilities rest upon us. We shall be brought into judgment for every thought, word and deed. The worldly governments do not dare to trespass on the individual liberty of thought, howeyer much they restrict actions and punish words. But there is a higher government, the power of (mil, winch holds us to account for all our unjust, impure or dishonest thoughts. We should not neglect or treat indifferently our thoughts, be cause they will engender deeds, good or bad, according to these very thoughts. Religion thus penetrates the inmost recesses ot the heart. It is our labor in life to save that living sntil which was given to us by God. Have we, all of us, done that which will give us full and fearless satisfaction? Can we all say that we lmvo done everything required in lite church and kingdom of God? If ,e can say that, our hearts will be lifted up with joy and exultation. It is true we are surrounded by many snares and temptations, still we dare not trespass against the holy ordi nances and sacred obligations re vealed from the heavens. Obedience and love, for the truth will secure for us the crowns of immortality, whilst transgression of law entails con demnation upon us, as it did in the case of Adam when he ale of the forbidden fruit. God set his band to the bringing about of this sublime work. Crowns, thrones, principalities and powers are promised to the faithful. The speaker related an incident that occurred to him about 30 years ago on a visit in Paris when he craved and got permission tosit upon the throne of Napoleon in the Tuileries. But bow much greater should be our do sires to obtain permanent, possession of eternal thrones of inextinguishable power. We have however, to labor for them and be faithful to the gospel and obedient to tho requirements of God and the counsel of the Priesthood. Ibis should be sn easy task, as these requirements are simple and rational. If salvation is something desirable and what can be more so? we must strive and labor for it. Through all the histoiy of our lives we realize that when we endeaver to do the good, an evil influence vill assail us and seek to frustrate the goo I. This kingdom is to be established through trials and troubles, but it will coma out victorious at last. The nation whioh gave birth to most us of, whose institutions we love and cherish, is arraying itself against us, intent on our destruction, and de privation of the inalienable rights We see the we have inherited. chief magistrate of this nation turn t deaf ear to the petitions of thousands of women and children and instruct the legislature to enact more stringent laws to prevent us from living according to the revela Hons of the Almighty. He, who gave these revelations, however, will take care of his people, if they are obedient and faithful and never become guilty of betraying the ordinances of the Lord or one another. We have got to fight the good fight in loyalty and faith, until the eter nal doctrines are established all over this earth. God works among his children with joy r.nd pleasure and the life of every faithful Elder is full of instances where the jower of God manifests itstiif to encourage and strengthen us and make our faith a power of life and salvation. There is a power in the promulgation of the principles of truth and righteousness which cannot be found elswhere. God works through many and various ways to bring the children of mn to a knowledge f them. 'The speaker concluded by invoking the blessing of the Lord upon all his faithful children.
