It is an ignoble thing to be governed by imaginary superiority over any of our less fortunate fellow citizens, and thrice ignoble to make active exhibition of so unworthy a sentiment by oppressing those we may deem beneath, us. True manhood dictates the extending of a helping hand to lift up the lowly, and words of encouragement to those who are struggling to le rate themselves. I ask you, my young friends, to give some thought to these suggestions, and to cultivate not only a love of country, but as well a lore for the sentiment of which our country was born. The address was loudly applauded. As the diplomas were awarded, ca' dets Late, Wilcox and Burnet were vociferously cheered by the corps when they advanced to take theirs This was significant, because upon these cadets Whlttaker had cast bus nicions. General Sherman's address was of a humorous character, and created much merriment. CAMPAIGN NOTES. By W. U. Tel. Niw York, WON'T April 11. Gov. Sey mour was, this atternoon, shown a ispatch to the press from Syracuse stating that the Syracuse CWtar of would urge his nomination and give assurances that he would not decline if nominated. The Olstrvor, this atternoon, publishes the dispatch and adds the following. There is no truth in the suggestion contained in the foregoing that Gov. Seymour has in any way changed or modified his position. He says now, as he has said all the time, that he is not and eannot he a candidate and that the could not accept a nomination, even if one ware tendered him. He deems.it immoral for any one to enter upon any public othco when his health is unequal to the pertor- mance of its labors. He alone can udge of this, and cannot yield his de cision to the opinions ot others He has never anticipated the pos sibility of his nomination and has only regarded the mention of his name as oneot the coincidents which ways mark political speculations before the meeting of a convention. In reply to any complimentary allU' sions to himself, lie has always dis tinctly and clearly stated his pur pose to withdraw from an active part in public affairs, although he felt a deep interest in the success of the party to which he was attached. In stating what he says upon this point, we only repeat his own words since the appearance ot the above dispatch n the newspapers and words so to meet his views, and not our own." By W U. He managed to dress himself and struggled on the deck, where there was u scene of equally mad confusion and frantic fear. A dense fog prevailed and only the whistle ana bell of the Stonington gave a token of her presence. Not far off there was a cry for the life boat, and one was cut looae from auiuuhip fiom near where Wilcox was standing. He threw himself over the side of the boat and fell safely within it. Others followed, including the wo man, who buried hita beneath her weight. Some one cut the boat loose, and it was pushed away from the burning steamer to avoid being swamped by the passengers, who were swimming about, supported by lite preservers, or pieces wf furniture, and filling toe air with cries for help. The ooat was pulled out and within a short time the Narragansett sunk, leaving total darkness on the water. The boat remained out for a while; Wil cox judged it might have been about three hours,' when feeling the p- proaoti or a coming storm, he urged the men to pull for the steamer Stonington, which was til,l blowing her whistle, as the rnly hope ito to escape being up'et.
