We are fairly etarted on the new year, and prospects are bright and assuring to most of us. The warm, mellow ray- - of the pod of day which descend upon all created things on this side the globe as we write, are themselves a beacon leading to cheerfulness of mind, their gentle yet powerful influence subduing the harshness of the atmosphere to which we were recently subjected and diffuinea gonial glow which invites contf mplaiion of the newly born period with feelings of confidence anil pb'Rsui'p. The past year, with its hirdiliips, toiU, strui!gV. trial, animosities, bickering an the ill wliicti afflict U'- ri'e canno' be recalled; it ell' immovable, Wl it by and leave it where we pfound it, wIi.Ih we go on and on.ench sten bringing into view and a8oci;t-tio- n "omething new nnd pieyii'iislv unthouaht of front out the impenetrable realms of futurity. We kilo what has been done, we Ciinnot a; vine what is comin.r, but we can profit by our experience and measurably if not entirely avoid a repetition f :u;iiiy of our faults, mi-.ftunes and sorrows while securing a firmer footing as we plod nlong the bighw-ito eternity. As the moans by which hup most brilliant temporal illuminnrioiis are erenied ctine .from the lark anil forbidding re Cfses of the earth, so may the irretrievable and fault-ladepast be made to yitld a light to guide our feet from shoals and sandbanks in the future. We are, none of us, too good, nor are any of us so bud that we cannot improve. Total depravity does not and cur.not exist so long as humanity abides. But we need not confine for our efforts to the of the cultivation others is, by force of association, the cultivation of ourselves. We all have some things chargod to our accounts which we w( uld gladly erase if we could; and, though the one at fault may dismiss them for a time from his re cord, others do not. A blunder is irreparable, a sin is never forgiven; once beyond the boundaries of propriety, and lo I how many bands and voices are raised to keep the offender there! How many charitable words are spoken to bring him back? We cannot all see things aL'ke,nor understand their meanings alike. The human family is composed of heterogeneous materials, those which predominate in some being scarcely discernible in others ; that which is food for one is another's poison, and scenes and circumstances which afford delight to our neighbor, are dre-r- y or even repulsive to us. Yet why should not the neighbor have his enjoyment, if our rights are not infringed upon nor the welfare of society endangered? Why set up the social Pro rustean bedstead, and shorten or lengthen other people in accordance with our own measure? The mind that rvels in gossip is diseased, and the tongue that habitually retails sound d is deformed; yet such diseases and deformities are common. There be those in every community who, once scenting in the social breeze the taiut of wronj-doindrop everything else and f Homing in the direction whicli thr'ir Vrll trained notrils point out, soon nrriv at the ground where the wound-- d g une is writhing, and then, like jackalls, they proceed to rend it. But we can do this, and the effort will be very flight. If it be not a criminal transaction, and one that does not particularlyfhurt us in any way, we need net repeat the details after they have been told us; it takes more and or less effort to echo small-talk- , we can thus Eave some little exertion by doing exactly the proper - -- n e. o-- i Chri-tian-it- no-hin- yu e thing. But if the transactions reported are of such nature as to demand intervention, investigation and exposure, there are authorities in every community whose duty it is to conduct that very business, and we can again save labor by permitting them to do it. INDIGNANT FOB WHATI, Business Maniger, Ogden Jcnction: Sir from New Years Day you will please send no more Junction. I repudiate the course the Junction takes with correspondence, at least with mine. With outa just Cause or any Provocation my Letters with one or two exceptions has been treatid with the utmost Contempt thereby creating an undut 'nfluence against me Si yet it is run by our own mountain Boys, which nly makes the Breech Wider, a gentile paper could not do more. If such an institution can prosper I have no objection. I will not patronise it all the Same therefore after this date I will not pay for the Junction, and oblige, L. D. Rudd. As the foregoing contains a statement of a supposed grievance, and is in forae respects the prototype of others we have received at different imes, we feel justified in printing it in ordr that the public may receive 'he charge and defense the complaint and answer at the same time, ltd judge whether or not the jour nalist is not a sorely tried and great-,'vexed individual. In Mr. Rudd's case, we often went beyond what we i'otiidered propriety by making our columns the vehicle by which his ideas were spread before the thus giving them a quasi endorsement. That we sometimes abridged and changed them, is not matter for complaint on his part, as our changes were only those which lack of knowledge in regard to orthography, syntax, punctuation and capitalization made necessary. His views on mining, the great wealth immedia tely before us, gold by the hat fill, Ac, we never subscribed to, but were willing that he should have such benefit from them as their peru' sal by the public would bring to him. We deemed it absurd to state that gold could be extracted from common lead ore by a cheap and simple process (or any other) and the person in possession of so valuable a secret be in needy circumstances, but were as usual perfectly willing to be controlled by our disposition to give every man a chance to be heard, seen and appreciated on his own footing. We have exhibited specimens of the "gold" sent to us by Mr. Rudd to men who claim to know something of metallurgy, and so far iheir undivided opinion is that the specimens are as destitute of gold or ought else of great value, as is an editor's pocket. We did this, not to disparage the gentleman's efforts or cast ridicule upon his ideas, but in order to ascertain if possible what grounds existed for his claimed discoveries; in short, whether there was ''anything in it;" he of course to reap the benefit if there was, we to endure a portion of the ridicule if there was not. And we are totally in the dark as to what the gentleman refers to in the above communication; we have not treated him nor his letters with contempt just the reverse. He must have placed false constructions upon our action in the premises. We have omitted portions of the letters signed by him, because the harmony of the whole article and the gravity of mind cm the part of the reader were greatly enhanced thereby ;th is we considered a favor to him, and hoped it would be appro ciated. As it was not, we do not complain, and candor compels us to state, in addition, that we do not particularly care. Mr. Rudd, or any one else who do ire, is at liberty to withdraw his patronage from the Junction whenever ho wishes to do so, with or with out a cause therefor. The paper is worth all we charge for it, and those who do not think so need not invest We are not overly independent, nor are we so dependent as to be.' for patron ge or consume so much space as has been done in this article in replying to any malcontent, critic or censor, as a practice; wo do s on this account for reason" tated at the commencement of these remarks. not fail to see and hear the unapproachable violinist, Herr Au Do gust v iiiielmj, who will appear at Union Opera house on the evenings of the 12th and llih of January. ddH 2w J.VT.
