Messrs Clayton and (ioodfellow, pinpietors of the Star saloon; yesterday received an epistle from the old man w ho was recently detected in the act of stealing their coal. He appologizes most humbly to them and the bar keeper for his action, saying that he committed the offence but once; that he vas induced by the condition of his family to steal; and that he hud previously made application in different quarters for assistance, but without success. He concluded by asking the gentlemen to whom the letter is addressed, to say anything they can for his good. Cum-ming- Fkb. 21, 17'J. Fpway Mokxisg, Education and Morality In Utah. Two or three letters have recently in appeared in Boston papers, wriiten the peorelation to mat tors affecting B. F. ple of Utah, by Elder who is now performing missionary labor in the modern Athens. newsThey were called forth by and utterances, paper articles, pulpit wide spreading rumors; and are written in clear, forcible style. They have evidently carried partial conviction to .eople, for the e litorial remarks upon them have been of a headvery fair character. Under the this edes article, the ing which prec Boston Jmmal of the' 1:2th inst. pub lishes the following communication: To the EdiliTi of the Button Journal: In your issue of yesterday there appears a report of a discourse bya minister recently from Salt Lake, in which some statements occur that are calculated to create erroneous impressions regarding educational mat ters in Utah. The statement that there are not and have never been imv free schools in that Territory is scarcely in accordance with the facts. Some years since the. Legislature nassed a law providing for meetings of the nullified voters in any school district, to decide by vote whether they would have a tree or subscription school ami many of the districts have decided in favor of the former, and free schools have for several yeurs beon growing in numbers and popularity. The speaker desoribed Utah as a region where thera was not a college within a thousand miles." As early the vear 155 the Legislature made an appropriation for the establishment of the University of Deseret, an institution that has flourished ever since, and at the present tune occupies a leading position among the educational iiisiiiuuoiis ui wie iai West. In connection with the University, which is located at Suit Lake City, is a Territorial Normal School sustained by legislative appropriation here teachers receive a thorough training, the whole being conducted by an able corps of professors. Before the introduction of free schools the children of the poor had their tuition paid from the Tithing Saints Fund, and tints the Latter-dacannot justly be charged with having neglected the education of their youth. Indeed," when it is remem bered that they wereuriven ny moo violence from comfortable homes to seek an asylum in the heart of the great Amorienn desert, more than a thousand miles from the frontier of civilization and in one of the most arid, barren and forbidding regions on t!) continent, a region where the severest toil was required to wrest from the inhospitableelements a bare subsistence, their accomplishments in the way of education should reflect lustre and not calumny upon their character. The, object, of the speaker wr to raise funds to pay tho salaries of certain individuals who are engaged in missionary, work among the Latter-daSaints, but it looks singular to see the people of Boston sending money nearly 3,000 miles away to sustain missionary work among a community who are universally a church going people, whose Sabbath schools are thronged with tens of thousands of little worshippers, and in whose midst the vices of , prostitution, gambling, etc-- were comparatively unknown until introduced by people who differed from them in religious faith. Saints do not While the Latter-daobject to sharing the benefits of money from the East they think it an imposition upon the public here to to conbe led by misrepresentation tribute money for the ostensible purpose of ameliorating their condition, while here, in these eastern cities, ave so many lost and fallen creatures, who are vastly more appropriate objects on which to bestow charity and philanthropy than the happy, comfortable ami contented people of Utah.
