Show trifling difference between the prices paid for work performed by the whit mau and that done by the copper-coloreincubus. Tlie first care of a nation- should be the welfare of its subjects, and when we are brought into competition with the Chinese for days' labor, something must be done. There are unquestionably more workmen than there is work to be performed;' and to divide what little there is with the inferior and alien race, is nota good nora just policy. We must take care of ourselves first, and leave matters of minor importance for subsequent consideration. The Chinese must not be driven or killed, but something must be done, and that speedily, looking to the prevention of further immigration, of a wholesale character at least, and the reduction as rapidly as possible of their numbers by not employing them to such extent as at present, thus bringing a gentle but powerful and needed pressure to bear upon the Chinese such as would cause them to return to their native land. Something of the kind will probably be done, for the telling force of Kearney's aphorism is be ginning to be felt throughout the country. d Issued very morning, (Mondays excepted), by the JVNCTION PaiNTINO ASSOCIATION Iacorpc rated.) If, as has been oo repeatedly stated jince Penis Kearney set the ball in motion ,the Chinese must go, it seems as though? the work of ejection was likely to be-- protracted one; for so far absolutely nothing has been acIn California,, where complished. a the feeling against them the heathens' numerical strength, go fer from falling off; is gaining year by year," It is perhaps the realization M the fact that the problem is rapidly becoming too colossal to- handle, that prompts the citizens of that State to bring the agitation, to- a boiling point, and eftect something or demonstrate the impossibility of doing so without delay. It is now useless to quibble or talk around the subject; and" unless the government itself takes the matter in hand and acts promptly and efficaciously, tilings iu the Golden State will be apt toculminate in a general uprising, in which, the Mongolians would be the principal ii not the only suf- ferers, So far Congress has neglected to take definite action of any kind in relation to tha matter, even to the extent of repealing a portion of its mischievous work known as the Burlingame treaty. Some modification in relation to the terms of that unpopular agreement has been vainly sought, and we are at last forced into the unpleasant predicament of recognizing the presence of Chinese white in America as a very large-sizeelephaat,, with no ready means but violence to displace it. The state f affairs in vogue at North Adams, Massachusetts, in which, the whites and Mongolians are completely reconciled, and all work together in harmony' and unison, receiving the same wages, etc., is not likely to become general.. Massachusetts is not nor has she ever been noted as a State in which high wages and comfortable living prevail; her social customs and regulations are as nearly the reverse of those in existence in California as possible; and being so- unpopular everywhere is more likely to excite efforts to wards its contraction than its expansion. The great majority of the people of the United States favor a higher scale of. " existence than, tha look and planj. upon, penurious and cramping treatment at the hands of employers as something to be indignantly frowned down. It may be the- case that more vicissitudes ini social lifo arise through extrava gance and lack of care ia the expenditure of means than otherwise, but so long as there is an attendant or ollateral cause, it will be the object assailed in preference to tha other( because we are not thereby, while seeking to remove an evil, forced into a position compelling ua to un mask.. It is certain, however, that much af the evil attributed to the Chinese has no other foundation than, the po litical capital which the agitation of the question provides for politicians and a certain indefinable' but deep-seateprejudice which commenced several years ago, and has steadily increased.. Again, civilized people are not inclined to relish to a great degree the society of barbarians; and where there is no neighborly feeling existing between old resideats, there is found to be enmity- - The Chinese eannot associate with the Caucasians for several reasons; their habits are too widely, at variance, and the celestials can't afford it. A Chinaman will live in a city like San Francisco, where the most exaggerated form of high lifo prevails,, and save money on wages which would not pay the daily igar bills of a large number of the male population. And then, as if to aggravate this offense, the savings are not invested in the community, nor do they go, directly, or indirectly, towards benefiting the locality or State from which the money is derived; the Chinese policy ia this regard, tlterefore, assumes the character of a drain. On the other hand, again, they do work which the refined Caucasian would not stoop to; they are, ia fact,, the sewers of society, and their labors are performed for such prices as render them available to all kinds of people. They are not generally slovenly or unclean; they are educated almost without exception; they keep themselves to themselves, and pay cash for all they d with-whic- "hand-to-mouth- d Tub Chicago Inter Ocean goes into an extacy of delight over the elec tion of John A. Logan as U. S. Sena tor from Illinois. The first of a half column of headlines over the dis patch is the word "Solid;" but, on seeing that the matter,so far from be we ing "solid" was double-leaded- , about its our mind changed being a direction from the editor to the com positor on the margin of the page which had been rset up by mistake and inserted, and an investigation showed that it meant the manner in which the Republicans in the Legis lature voted. The Inter Otean is especially vociferous in proclaiming the "stalwart" character of Illinois Republicanism, as evinced by the election, and, we should judge, needs but one more event of that kind tha election of Zauh Chandler in Michigan to make its . happiness perfect. Perhaps it would be a good idea to send Zachariah to Washington at once; he can't reduce ' the character of the Senate chamber a particle so long as Logan ia there; and if both of them must wear the Senatorial toga, by all means let it be at the same time. Seven thousand dollars is a good round sum for one night's receipts, even by an opera company, but that is the amount which found its way into the treasury at Haverly's theatre in Chicago Friday night. From the Lake Democrat we learn the following particulars of a horrible death at the Sulphur Banks, Lake county; About noon on Sunday, December 29, Daniel Sutherland, brother to John Sutherland, one of the bosses, a native of Nova Scotia, while at work in the seventy foot shaft, at the bottom of which is a geyser which throws up a stream of water the temperature of which is 180 degrees Fahrenheit, missed his footing and fell. He dropped some fourteen feet into the boiling water and was pulled out by the boss carpenter, McCabe, who had to descend a ladder from whence Sutherland fell to rescue him. When rescued his hair came off' in the hands of his rescuer, so frightfully was he scalded. Dr. Downes was telegraphed for, and everything done for the sufferer, but without avail. He died in three hours after the accident, a sad and pitiable sight to look upon. He was a sober, industrious man, and had worked at the Sulphur Bank mine about a year. His sad death cast quite a gloom over the resident community atSulphur Bank, as the deceased was universally liked and respected. and Well Selected Sleek of Wo8t Korth CoDTuint to all Traiai, FLORIDA.
