It is further proposed that the lands of the companies shall be exempt from taxation under State or territorial authority,, and that the present law making all lands net disposed of within three years subject shall be repeated. to There are some features in this proposition to .which we object, and hope Congress will not adopt them. It would be wrong to keep the government land undisposed of, tied up ior an unlimited time, out of reach of aotual settlers, merely to give these companies an opportunity to ell their lands without competitors. The United States' lands, as well ri thq companies' lands, ought to be Hold as fart as required for settlement, thus becoming taxable as well as productive. The proposition to exempt the lands belonging to the railroad companies from taxation by the States or Territories-iwhich is which one lie, they Congress has wo right to embody in. any law, and which the. companies ought not to expect. "With these exceptions, we think the preposition or something of the kind, ought to be adopted. n SECRET SOCIETY. From 'a San Irancisco dispatch, published elsewhere, it seems that a secret society,, oalled the California Secret Organisation,, has been formed ia- California. For what purpose the order has been created we caa readily guess, but how it proposes to accomplish that purpose, it one of its secrets. It would seem from the proceedings of a late meetCentral ing of the that Union, they discourage and deprecate all acts of violence toward fcbe Chinese,, and invoke protection for them at the, hands of tbs police. This propositus provides that each of the companies shall pay into the treasury of the United States annually $600,000 for the term of ten years, and $750,090 annually thereafter until these amounts with compound interest, shall create a sinking fund of sufficient amount to liquidate the subsidy bonds issued to the respective roads, and advanced to said company, together with simple interest up to the dates of maturity. We call attention to it for tbe purpose of suggesting to our farmer and others, the propriety of setting out,, in Utah, some timber of that kind. Surely no better invest ment can be made than in growing trees of such value for health, shade and fuel. Celebration Rates.
