Dyer, district attor ney at St. Louis, in reference to the testimony of C. D. Bell, detective, who testified yesterday. The witness first met Bell in St. Louis in the fall of 1875 He came to the district attorcey's office one day And shewed an envelope with a note on the back signed Avery, and he (witness) understooj it to be written to Fitzroy to deliver any papers in his possession to Bell. He understood that Bell was seeking evidence for the government. Bell was to see Joyce, and if pcssihle get a correspondence tbat passed between Joyce, Avery and Babcock. He wrote a note to the warden of the jail and asked him to deliver the papers to Bell, the bearer. Bell subsequently came to St Louis duriug tbe time of the Bibcock trial. Witness met him at the house of Eaton, a upecial counsel for the He intimated that he had government. got the Avery papers from the files of tbe district attorney's office and exhibited them lo Avery and wife at the Lin-de- ll hotel Witness asked him the character of the papers in order to ascertain the truth of the statement. Bell said he had a pencil memorandum from Bluford Wilson, and a dispatch from the treasury asking witness to come to the secretary's room. He remembered he had sucti papers in his possession and was satisfied from Bell's conversation that he knew something about their disappearance Boll had asked if he had any dispatches signed B. Finch or Bull Finch. Bell said he had certain docu ments in his possession in vNew York, and bad telegraphed for them to be forwarded to St. Louis by express; that the papers consisted of cypher, partly in bis and partly in Luckey'a handwriting; also a letter from A C. Bradley, telling bim to come to Washington and be would be cared for. The substance of hig statement was tbat a proposition bad been made to him by Luckey aud Bab cock to extract the testimony in the Babcock case from the district attor ney s otlice. Witness had bea very careful of ihe dispatches and letters relating to the Babcock case, because he feared some sueh exploit as was resorted to in tbe Avery case. He placed them in a box and deposited them in a safe deposit vault. Before tbat Bell was one day eeen in the district attorney's office overhauling some papers an4 was in formed that nobody was allowed to do that in the absence of Col. Dyer.
