Show Cilll M TBASDBL'S, Formation of Anthracite Itldge Coal in the Indian ShnVt. From the Shenandoah We have before us on our table a iBtraeite upecimen which is sesolidified half eoal and the other diment that four year ago was all DAILY soft aediraent. For over four jears there bad been in use in the IndiaB Kidge Shaft of the Philadelphia and Heading Coal and Iron Company, this district, a wooden pipe, about 6ix inches in diameter, made of inch boards nailed together, which served to carry water from one of the rings in the shaft to a lower level. The rings are boxes around the sides of g the Baft which catch tbe water or coal, out of the rock, slate, $4: and are pnt in to prevent the water from .falling down and making a of the shaft. At regular shower-batthe ring in question a large spring in the slate, about thirty feet below the Primrose vein, had been struck, the CIRCULATES IN water from which is apparently as pure as orystal. Some four months since it was found that this wooden pipe had become so clogged with the ALL THE reddish-browsediment that is demine the ail that water, posited by open space ia it was not more than or two inches in diameter, and not large enough to carry off the water from the ring. Consequently a new pipe was put in, and the old one, nearly closed with the sediment adhering to its sides, was left standin. The water was then turned - into the new Coached by a Dally Mail. pipe and cutoff frou the old one, which is some fifty fuet over in length. On Friday last, after remaining in the 6haft without any water passing through it for over four months, the greater part of this old pipe was taken out, and when broken open the wonderful phenomenon presented itself that the sedement was AT THE gradually changing into what ap- to be anthracite ooal. About a Eenrs inch of the inside of tho sediment lining the pipe had ch$)ged into coal, andthe'remainder was also gradually changing, the only portions of the sediment remaining quite soft being that part deposited first and next the sides of the pipe. A cross section of tbe pipe bow shows, commencing at the centre, first a circle of about a half an inch in diameter h surrounding the opening re the in then a circle of OF ALL KINDS, maining pipe, sediment partly turned into coal, and . j then the sediment in its natural state and the sides of tho pipe. , The surface of sediment which was exposed Is Executed in the Best to the action of the atmosphere has Style, at thanged first, and the same influence er chemical combinations which bad changed in nature were gradually operating on the rest of the sedi- REASONABLE PRICES. ment. Tbe process of formation is plainly seen in the sediment next that already turned into coal. Heads, There is no Keely motor business about this discovery. A section of the' pipe about sixteen feet long has Statements, been left standing iu the shaft to see what results will follow in the next Books, six months or year. Samples have tho been sent to Gen. Pleasants at Ball Pottsville for examination, and we suppose tbe public will sooa have Cheeks, the opinion of gontlemen qualified to this on formation judge surprising ICote Forms, but if anthracite coal will form from sediment deposited by mine water when exposed to the action of the at- Deeds, mosphere under certain conditions Reeeipts, fur a period as short as four month, what becomes of all the pet theories of the geologists and mining engiShipping Tags, &c, neers on this subject?
