INFLATION. are usually very active-- , very shrewd and influential caen, andcertainly Mr. Gould is no exception, to the rule, but we apprehend that he will fail io his designs, should they extend so far as is indicated by some of the writers for the western press, who have lately been giving publicity to such views as are here referred to. We ef Utah have the benefits of a Continental Highway, but do not forget that Southern California, Arizona and Texas are cut off from diWe do rect inter communication. not particularly favor government aid by way of bonus to the Southern Pacific road, but want to see it built, and do not want our road to be in strumental io its de'eat. The following notice was published in the Pennsylvania-Gazctt- Fenruary 14th, e 1875, and we republish it in order that our readers may contrast the mail facilities of the years 1775 and 1875. "It having been found very inconvenient to persons concerned in tmde; that the mail from 'Philadelphia to New February H, England,' sets out but onee a fortenig.it during the winter season; this is to give notice, that the New England mail will henceforth go once a week the year rouad, whereby correspondence may be carried on, an J answers obtained to letters between Philadelphia and Boston in three weeks, which used in the winter to require fix weeks.' r genBy command of the eral, William Franklin, Comptroller. post-maste- g to-th- object to. thereby come into possession of Lady Audley's Swcret, and at the same time enjoy a hearty laugh over Love in Livery. We notice from different quarters indications of a supposed design on too part of Mr. Jay Gonld, who ia at present a very potent railroad manager, in reference to the Southern Pacific Railroad, the present pet of Col. Tom Scott. With the present management of . the U. P. railroad by Mr. Gould, or with that gentleman, we have no particular fault to find. We do not know what designs he may have in regard to the Tom Scott road, but for the benefit of the whole country we do most sincerely hope that he confine - himself will to the management, of tis own road and leave Mr. Scott to build the Southern it he ean. The country needs more than one road across the comment, ana we none to sra h second one completed within a few "years." Mr. Scott is an active man and we hope will succeed iu com-- . j'cting his road. Any legitimate eombinatioa which Mr. Gould may be able to make whereby the interests of the stockholders of the U. P. Company may be subserved, without a corresponding injury to the public, or tD kindred projects, will meet with our hearty approval, but we should preeate as a great public evil, any eojubination calculated to defeat a . oothern 1'acmc railroad. , It may be, and doubtless very difficult matter to prevent comMna-tvme- , of th't kind. Editor Junction t Sir: Please iisert the following letter of inquiry in the earliest issue of your invaluable paper, and oblige the writer. Where is the Koad Supervisor of in this county? He is wanted immediately, with a farce of men, to attend to a little public business, such as repairing a terrible mud hole in the vicinity of his own house. Two hundred dollars can be expended in the with profit to the pubshape of poll-talic, on the roads under his supervision, for which the publio will thank him. The writer who makes this inquiry, with his wife and child, was ia great jeopardy of broken limbs, or being sent into the eternal world, unshrived, for which he is not particularly anxious at present. Therp are several ptaees in the district of the supervisor above-aamethat could be materially Improved, and just now is the time, for, when the storms of winter come, the roads will be rendered utterly impassable. It is hoped that the supervisor will attend te this at once, and save further tremble. A hint U the wise is sufficient.
