Coin, Gold Dust, College Jcrip Chenango Forks, Aug. 13. John pangborn, working a farmer named Chapel, iear this place, awoke about 12 o'clock on Wednesday night, and thought he heard the cat in the cellar among the milk pans. lie jumped out of bed, lit his lantern, and, without dressing hurried down to the cellar to drive the cat out. As he opened the door at the bottom of the stepi, a strong draft of wind at once informed him that the outside cellar door was open. At the same time his light full upon two strange men standing at the foot of the steps leading up to the outside door, where they had rolled about a dozen tubi of butter. They were in the act of carrying them up stairs. Pangborn, without giving the men a chance to recover from their astonishment at his appearance, ran his left arm through the carrying ring of the lantern, and seized both by the collar. As he did that he received a blow in the face from one of the men, and they both grappled with him and threw him to tlie cellar floor One of them exclaimed, as he showered blows quick aud heavy on Pang-bor' Kill the d a ." The lantern was put out in the struggle, aud the burglar would soon have made the exclamation good but for a fortunate incident. Ashe fell, Panjiburn threw his right arm out to breuk the force of the fall. There was a blood of clotted op. the pool great where the wounded burglar nagging had lain, and the three cornered piece of stone, with blood and a buuch of hair on one corner, to tell of the perhaps deadly nature of the conflict; but the burglars wera gone. Search was mad for some trace of their whereabouts, but beyond pome drops of blood on the cellar steps nothing could be found leading to their hiding place. Next morning they were tracked into the heavy woods near the bouse, w,here trace ol them was lost. Pangborn insists that the burglar he struck with a stone is kilhd. He says th skull was mashed in, and that ne man could receive such a blow as he gave that one and live, The stone was nearly ten pounds in weight The theory of tho escape is that the gecoud burglar merely pretended to be necked d jwn when he fell, and shammed unsconsciousness. Wnen took left cellar he the his Pangborn dead companion on his shoulder, and before his flight was discovered was some distance away iu the woods. Pangborn savs that the second burglar was a powerful man, and the dead one slight, and that the former could easily have carried him away. if the oue burglar wa really killed or latally wounded, as it seems reasonable to suppose he was, his companion has doubtless buried him in the woods, and is by this time cut of danger of capture.
