He spoke of tbe duties and rights ef lawyers in regurd to the espousal of causes, and aaid if the standard set up by flippant commentators on bis profession wa correct, the independence ef the bar would c reduced to a degree which would inperil tbe admin of justice in a free country. When Tracy was first asked to enter into consultation, be stipulated tbat he should enter in as be was, a friend for Beecber. Tilton spoke of the etiquette of the legal profession, and in answer to his inquiries Tracy said be would not act as counsel for Beecher in the litiga tion of the case then submit' ed to him. Tilton told his case, and Tracy said it was no ease which could involve 'legal proceedings.
