A letter from Port Jervls, J., UBder date of February 28th, says: ''The ice that covered the river froml here to Lackawaxen, twenty miles up the river, is gorged in the channel frem three miles above this place to a mile below. The ice is thirty feet high in places, and 700 feet wide. It is wedged against the bottom of the river. Below here the river U an unbroken body of ice for forty miles, and there is no possible way for the immense mass to move off until the river is raised by a freshet at least three feet. A freshet large enough to move this vast field will bring down the river the miles of ice that are gorged at different points above, and sweep everything in exposed places like a portion of this before it. The splendid new $50,000 suspension bridge across the river here is doomed, even if the worst fears of the populace are not realized, . tl At Halbert's Bend, twenty-thre- e miles above here, the iee that was between that point and Meunt Hope, two miles, is gorged ia a huge mound from twenty-fiv- e to fifty feet high, and 500 feet wide. From 1 river up two miles the river is full from bank te bank, thirty feet thick. In Cochecton Falls the ice that was jammed in has thrown the water back over the flats for seven miles, inundating portions of Cochecton and There are several gorges above these points, and the greatest anxiety prevails among those living along the river as to the result when the high water comes. The Ice that Threatens Port noident is a curious illustration of the peculiar notions our Teutonic neighbors entertain with regard to the san:tity of marital relations, and as all the actors in the comedy (for it was enacted in too good faith to be considered a farce), are persons of education and of fair gtandios with their copatriots, it exhibits the wide difference between : American and German ideas of propriety. I wo years since a young couple came to Hoboken where the man took a dwelling in order to carry on busi ness in the city. Ihey appeared sin gularly affectionate and generally contented, although not in the best of circumstances, as the husband was industrious and the wife courteous and good looking. An addnion to their fireside was announced at the end of the past year in a stranger who was evidently a military man and a possessor of con siderable means. Gossips are abundant in Hoboken, and the story of the new comer be came speedily popularized. He had been a previous lover of the young woman, had served in the Franco- German war, been wounded, reported ead and detained in exile. Ihe young betrothed had taken to herself another love, married him and come to this country. The soldier returned to his home, discovered his loss and voyaged forth to rediscover her. He was successful and found the lady on the banks of the Hudson. The sight of her first lover rekin dled the ancient flame; her marriage was an error which could be rectified soby a general compromise.., Ihe. ldier paid down $1,000 for the young wftinan s emancipation, and both de parted for a long watch fin the Rhine.
