From the Tyler, Texas, Democrat, At first thought, the idea of the whipping post in this state, as a punishment tor crime, will probably be repulsed by every mind; but upou reflection, we are not made by but that tha moveuu-nour Legislature in that direction is a pood one, and that a great many people will conclude that such a means of punishment is almost a necessity, for more reasons than one. To put a man id jail who has no feelings of pride to be wounded and no character .to be soiled, is, to say the least of it, but small punishment s t himj nevertheless about of those who find their way there, are just such characters. They have no money with which to pay fines in the smallest cases that arise against them, and must of necessity be sent to jail, to "board it out," at the expense of the honest people outside. The natural result is that thejailsare always full, the dockets of the court are crowded, trivial ought to trial, take up the time be devoted to important business, the counties are run into debt, and after nil the guilt'- - parties are really not punished at all for, as before intimated, the "average jail bird of tha period" had about as soon be in jail We- - brieve that us any where eW. if the law was so changed that when a man slips into a store or residence and steals a "pair of shoes, a hat, or home similar article of value; or into the woods aiidappTCf riatcralog-oa beef that does not belong to him, at once before a he could the peace, subjected to a justice of good thrashing, and lei that be the end of it, it. would uot only greatly reduce the frequency of such crimes, but also reduce expenses vciy ma terially. eer-tai- u t three-f.iurth- eEa Fifth St., Ogden, their thanks -- A GOOD FIT GUARANTEED.
