FREE LOVE FOR 'Fit I SCO The Salt Lake Herald of this morning publishes in full eome affidavits read yesterday in the Third District Court, in the case r O. F .Strickland ts. Flagstaff Mining Company. Strickland, plaintiff in the caw, is the not altogether unkno-m' to fume in connection with Drake; the latter having auod tfi former for a Bum of monjy which was to have );eu paid, as he alleged, in consideration of the transfer of tlr Associate Judgeship of Utah from iVake' to Strickland. 0. F. S. claimed $8,000 from the Flagstaff Company for services a its attorney, and judgment was rendered against the t Company by default in January Inst. A motion- to set aside that judgment, and execution, was mada yesterday, and Messrs. N. M. Maxwell and J. N. H. Patrick made affidavits which, if true and correct, are almost as damaging to, the reputatiou of the cx Judge as the. sworn statements of the retired Drake. . .wMr. Mxwell swears that in the early part of 1873, while in charge of the Flagstaff Company, Strickland informed him that he bad resigned bra positidn.u Judge, and would be kuccfeded by a friend of his from Michi;H named Mitchell;, that he could influence Mitchell, hud it would ut Sil-V- Tennie C. The object ef her trip to the Wext is to spcculato in mines, and recuperate the broken fortunes of Woodhull and Co. She declares herself a partner with her sister in everything. The tribulations they er , i ex-Jud- e ex-Ju- of the Beecher Scandal have almost ruined them, and Tennie means to start a branch office in San Francisco. She will stay awhile in Utah, and write up "a true version of affairs in Mormondom." This has been an eventful Uny in WhII street. It opened with the failure of Capron St Merriam, And tbe C. C. and I. C. pool, and was followed by events which precipitated a piinio ou the Stock Exchange. The failure of tbe above whs followed by various rumors, all. of whkh tended to diatnrb confidence and unsettle matters generally. There was a report that a railroad and stenm&hip war was likely to result from the inability of tbe Pacific, Mail, Pmnia and U. I'., to agree upon lome amicable freight arrangement, and that the Central l'acifo was about consummating an agreement with an English company to put on an opposition line ef steamers between Sa.i Francisco, Japan and China. All of tbete facts and rumors caused an eisrtnous pressure of sales on tbe street, and Lxcbange prices declined from 1 te 18$ per cent., C. C. and I. . leading downward. At one time daring the p. ra. there was a rally of I te 2 per oeut., but at the close the market was heavy and lower again. Money, from 4 per cent, currency, to 7 per cent. eold. Ttiere were some vague rumors that several banks were in trouble. The heavy declin in clocks disturbed seriously the margins of tbe weaker class of speculators, aad large sales for their account helped to depress matters. Ever since- the September pania Capron & Merriara have been car rying large amounts of C. C. nd 1. C, it is stated as high as 24,000 shares. For a day or two bick rumors have been in circulation to the effect that about twen ty thousand of these shares have been hypothecated at the German-America- n Bank, and that in consequence of the ebange of management in said institution tbe loan bad been called, and that Capron & Merriam were not able to respond. Under the pressure of heavy sales the price declined from 30 to 20, and in three hours from the commence msnt of business fifty thousand shares eianged hands. Mr. Capron sajs the misfortune was brought about by tbe treachery of those he supposed to be friends, for whom he had agreed to oarry large- amounts of stock for sixty or ninety days. When the market began te break, this morning, the persoes for whom he was carrying this stock went inte the market without any notice to bim whatever, and sold every share they held. Tbe most of the creditors are willing t make settlement on favorable terms, and the firm expect to be on their feet agiin. Cupron and Merriam are well known on the street, and mtreb sympathy is expressed for them in ibeir temporary misfortune. Moaey was active late 'u the day aid rose te 7 gold. Foreign Exchange was advanced this afternoon, by leading bankers, to 4 85 for sixty days, and 4 85 for demand, but 4.85 to 4.S8 are still about the rates for actual business.
