She was the "posthumous daughter" of Geu. Gibson, who was shot and killed in the Mexican war. She had a brother a few years her senior. Her mother was left with considerable property, besides the father's pension. . ' When Lizzie was six years old her mother died, and she and her brother went to live with their uucle in Philadelphia, who was appointed their guardiaB. This uncle lost the greater portion of the inheritance of the children' in speculation. However, there was enough left to give Lizzie an and for several years she attended Oberlin College, Ohio.. Early in the spring of 186-- Lizzie went to Kentucky, and while driving through Camp Nelson was introduced to Lieut. C. V. Norwood ; and here begins a romance. Norwood and Lizzie were eventually engaged. He went into business in Cincinnati, and was swindled out of everything by a rascally partner. He bade her farewell, and left for the mountains. She at length went to Huntsville, Alabama. He located at Helena, Montana, and soon retrieved his mh fortune. In the spring of 18G7 Norwood was a partner in a prosperous commission and wholesale housa. He sen ample means to his affianced, and in company with Green Clay Smith and his wife Gen. Smith biiug at that time Governor of Montana Lizzie set out for the mouutains. The party passed up the Missouri on the steamer May ,1867. At Virginia City they were met by Mr. Norwood, and at the residence of Gin. Sol. Merudith; then Surveyor-Genera- l n of the Territory, Lizzie liecame Mrs. C. W. Norwood. At this time Mr. Norwood could have disposed of his inteiest in the firm of which he was a member, lor at least 15,000. Five months later the firm failed, and he was left without a dollar. In a Government wagon, in the bleak November of that year, he and his wife set out for Cheyenne, thn the western terminus of the Union Pacific railroad, and arrived there after days of mountain travel. Norwood managed to get money enough to put up a shanty, without a floor, and in that they lived during that terrible "winter, and there their child was born. With the spring and summer came brighter times. r And right here an incident should be stated that illustrates the character of. the deceased. One day her husband, orr coming liome to dinner, was surprised and puzzled to see the sign ' Magnolia Laundry"; over the door of his humble abode. His wife soon solved the mystery by informing him that she had determined to do what bhe could do to help him along, and as G reek and Latin were at a discount aud soiled linen at a premium in Cheyenne, bhe had taken a practi cal view of the situation. With such a wife, any man of any nerve would be compelled to succeed. In due time they acquired a fair 'stake,' and eveutually removed to Kansas City, where Mr. Norwood is for one of the largnow est wholesale houses in the city, and enjoys the confidence of the best business men of the city. , W. forty-thre- LIQUORS. iWto410 rront Street' Sau Frnoi'c8- - e er In his day.
