The man who did the outting was John Nagle (not Jack Nagle, Known in eastern Aevaaa,) a man who for a time had worked at the foundry named, but who, for some reason, had been discharged. Nagle has for some time appeared to havu harbored evil thoughts towards Patrick Karvin, engineer at the foundry, for the reason that he thought he had said something against him, or was in some way instrumental in procuring his discharge. Night before last the men met, when Nagle began abusing Karvin, and threatened to Btrike hiui with a bottle. Nagle declared that he was the best .blacksmith helper in the State, and stating that as Karvin had said different he must take it back. Karvin managed to get away from Nagle, telling him he did not desire to fight, etc. Yesterday forenoon, however, Nagle heeled himself with his and went to the little butcher-knife- , foundry, where he found Karvin, and renewed his abuse. He told Karvin that he had said he was not the best helper in the State, and he must take it back. Nagle was a great deal under the influence of liquor and was very abusive. Of a suddvu the men came to blows, but as to which was the first to strike, those in the vicinity do not seem to agree. In the tussel which followed, Nagle was observed to suddenly reach behind his back and draw forth a huge butcher-Knif- e a regular cleaver. An instant after, he made a savage plunge, and thrust the knife clear through Kar-vin- 's right thigh, half way between the thigh and hip joint. Those who were in the vieinijy now rushed forward ts prevent Nagle from murdering Karvin on the spot. As they attempted to seize him lie made a dash with his knife and plunged it into the back part of the left thigh of James Brown, foreman of the foundry. He flourished his knife savagely, striking at all who approached for the purpose of wresting it from his grasp, ana in this way he cut two others, giving one of them (Wm. ltoaghan) quite a slash across the left. wrist. He threatened the lives of nearly all who were present, and for a time made it very lively for Thomas Lawther, a ma chinist, following him up savagely, while Lawther warded off the knife and defended himself as well as he could, with a large file that he happened lo have in his hand. Nagle w as at las disarmed by several men rushing upon him at once, when he beat a retreat for his cabin. Messengers were at once sent to Gold H.ll for a physician and for the police. Dr. Kirby was found and hastened to the relief of. the wounded, while officer Harkin, taking the first horse he could find, started for the scene of battle for the purpose of arresting the savage blacksmith-helper- ; no enviable task, as it was supposed he had armed himself upon going to his cabin, and would probably make a desperate resistance. . The condition of the wounded was found by Dr. Kirby to be as follows : Patrick Karvin had a knife thrust clear through his right thigh, the weapon passing so near the femoral artery as almost to touch it. The wound is a very dangerous one and may eventually prove fatal. The wound received by James Brown, though severe, is not considered to be dangerous. The wounds of the others amount to but little. The arrest was made without difficulty, Nagle offering no resistance, though Harkin was obliged to do ' some very "nice talk'ing." Nagle was committed without bail, by Justice : Wright, and was brought to this city and lodged in the County Jail to await the result of the wounds he had inflicted. He told oflieer Harkin that he did not go to the foundry for a fight, but merely for the purpose of having a talk with Karvin. He accounts for his having the knife with him by saying that he took it along in order to grind it. The knife, which was shown us bv Harkin, has a blade eleven and a half inches in length. It is made of an old file, and is a savage-lookin- g weapon. Its edge is dull and notched, but the point is quite sharp. This wholesale stabbing created a good deal of excite' ment in Lower Gold Hill. Virginia (JVe ) EnUryrite, 13a inst. i J.R. WILLIAMS, SOLK PROPRIETOR.
