Office in Tecry S. M. PRES1UW. Yokk, Sept. Washington t There was some little stir hre Saturday over the piece of news from San Francisco to the effect that more sugar has been received at that port during tha past year than could by any possibility have been raised in the Sandwich Islands, whose sugar is admitted to San Francisco duty freo. The amount in excess of jyha-- had been expected was estimated at a figure large enough to have yielded in duties $150,000. The inference is that Demerara sugar had been shipped there via the Sandwich Islands. It is a fact that the extra expense pf shipping fo far, together with the freight rates from San Francisco, would make ip difficult if not impossible, to bring sugars east of the Rocky Mountains for less than they could be had via New York, duty paid, and detracts measurably from the significance of the news. . The Tribune tays of the Maine election: It would seem as if the returns of back towns in Penubscot and Aroostook countU-f-, and as fur up Kennebec, where thero are no telegraphs, will be required to seuie lue question whether Davis is elected by the popular vote. It was in these towns that the givenbackers made the heaviest inroads on the republican vote last year, and there the heaviest republican gains may be looked for. According to thf! latest dispatehes last night, the chances are about eve-for Davis' election. Tho writer thinks nothing will be lef t of the greenbuckers in Maine, after this year. The TlVWsays tht wind did not hurt the republicans for once, as the ktreenbackers' utrenuth is in the rural districts. Conceding to the republicans everything that they claim, the situation is this: They have failed to carry, after exertions unapproached in any previous campaign, and with help of nil the great guns of their party, a stale which for .nearly a generation has been easily won by republican majorities ranging from 10,000 to 'Jiiw, and even higher. So much for IlUtine; now let the democrats of New York press home on Conkling and Vice Presi- dent Wheeler. The Tims, commenting workingmen's logic Isaac S. Then there is Clitus Barbour, the workingmen's candidate for congressman in thetlrst district. What has Clitus Barbour, lawyer and fomentor of ctrii'e, in common tho with peaceful workingmen, yet, the California workingmen, with a strange inconsistency, nominated this man for congress against a citizen, who, as a dealer in merchant merCliat dise, had given employ mer,t to 0 men where Barbour had given none. If. then, occupations of men afford any passport within the magic circle in .v which they of are entitled to so much respect, where shall we draw the line; at Kearney, who drove a dray, but drives no mare, cr with Clitus never did a day's allowance of manual labor in his lifej ju.-- Kear-neyite- ad o There'll Beer Bon! New Yoek, Sept. 9. The demon- stration yesterday of the German brewers and ethers in the interest of the Sunday beer gardens in New ark, N. J., was very striking. It is estimated that twelve thousand people were in the procession. The beer saloops and houses of tho sympathizer were hung with bunting, and the streets were thronged.
