the city council took place yesterday afternoon mayor peery occupied the chair there were attendance aldermen wright dee and councillors councilors Counci lors boyle driver folker rich and recorder T J PETITIONS the following letter to tho recorder was read the offer of 25 to us Is refused we have paid oat 50 in cash besides the awa use of a horse for three months and other like favors our damage to date is 75 and 50 a paid at your next meeting we shall commence action for the full amount yours respectfully horkins fe co the matter was briefly discussed and on motion of councilor rich the letter was laid on the table the assessor and collector represented that certain portions of property had been assessed to two different parties and therefore asked that the amount of assessment so rendered invalid be stricken from the roll on motion af pf alderman wright the request was granted the recorder stated that tho assessment roll is now paid up the fire companies sent in a corn muni cation stating that the accommodations in are not adequate for a place of meeting and requested that abo council appropriate prop a sum not to exceed which amount would be sufficient to fit up a portion of the hall for the purposes of holding meetings et cetera alderman wright moved aaa the appropriation asked for ba made alita was d by councilor rich that the matter be referred to the committee ou fire department with power to act carried forty residents of mar bent in n petition representing that the street leading from the south east corner of brooms bench to main street is in an almost impassible condition and asked for relief the petitioners petition ers agree to pay a portion of the expenses the petition was referred to the corn matteo on streets power to act COMMITTEE alderman dee asked for further time in regard to a bill which tho committee on laws will introduce prohibiting the making of bonfires within the city limits between gun set and tun rise further time was granted mr wright of the committee on license reported on the petition of and fry it is the sense of the committee that the petition bo not granted that is that portion of the petition which properly belongs to the license committee mr boyle was in favor af fostering home institutions the ogden brewers areat a disadvantage in that lake brewers can open an agency in ogden and can sell when the brewers first took the water a large expense was incurred in extending the mains but now several other customers have been secured hence the necessity for a high rate docs not now exist on motion of councilor rich the committee on license was given further time to the question of manufacturers license motion adopted alderman of tho on reported favorably on the petition of stoddard son for a rebate of 83 00 ou unused lumber merchants license report adopted alderman dee of on water cupply fated for further liine to consider the petition of richter and fry for a reduction of water license conjointly with the license committee further time was given councilor drivel of tho com cittee on streets reported work done on first street cast of main and second street a culvert has been put in on fifth street the work done on the streets is not so extensive as it would have been if the weather had been inure favor able report accepted councilor rich of the sanitary committee reported on the condition of alie yard at the back of the coop co op the owners of the property think they should have BUTOR ais from the city in cleaning up the place aa it is used by the public to p ica their teams air rich eliou t loiero was good reason for such t the mayor congratulated the sanitary committee on the efficient manner in which their labors arc performed and attributed tho general good health of the community to this fact on motion of alderman dee the sanitary committee was given tho ledge of furnishing such assistance as they deem necessary in cleaning up the yard miscellaneous BUSINESS councilor boyle of the special committee on tramway made a brief report the recorder read a report of fines remitted by the mayor on motion of councilor rich the report of the mayor was accepted alderman dee asked permission of the council to have some cards printed these cards are needed for the purpose of getting the cemetery record in good order the committee was empowered to act in the matter the mayor stated that the money entrusted to him for eleemosynary purposes he had handed over to the marshal alio marshal now reports his expenditures of said money the report was accepted and another was appropriated far a similar use the mayor called the attention of the street committee to the necessity for furnishing needy poor men with employment he thought that the men who need assistance most are those who havo nr artl ako tko was instructed to devise some means whereby men who have no teams can obtain employment the usual bills were allowed and an
