idaho idalio november 17 1883 at p m apostle rich ha hm been prostrated for a long time from tho the effects of a paralytic stroke his death has not riot been al altogether to gether unexpected but th the blow now that it has fallen is felt to ba nevertheless for lie was a man truly beloved by the whole church of latter day saints and many others who are not of their faith he ile was one of the firm of the church of the living god and one among the many who have borno borne the heat and borthen of the day and has labored bard hard handlong iong long and traveled extensively to preach and establish at homo home and in foreign lands the gospel of the tile son of god which has been restored to the earth again 0 io in this last dispensation he ile wai a man of large experience plain outspoken but kind and fatherly atherly to his people over whom he watched with genuine paternal solicitude licit ude his instructions were very practical and always related to the everyday every day temporal as well wal I 1 as spiritual duties and services the tile following brief biographical sketch will bo be read with deep interest by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance charles coulsen rich was the only son son of joseph rich and nancy oneal he ile was born august 1809 in campblell lel county state of kentucky shortly after his father moved to switzerland county indiana where he lie purchased a email all farm which had bad to be cleared A portion of the timo time his father was in the employ of the government building block houses and performing various labors necessary for tho the protection of the settlers settlers against the indians who were at that time very troublesome to tho the thinly populated settlements of indiana he ile C C rich commenced ploughing sloughing hing when eight years of age he usually went to school three months in ill the year working on the farm the remainder of his time in 1829 hii father sold his farm and moved west to illinois arriving in tazwell county illinois october r ath his father wintered at pleasant grove and in the spring moved and took up a claim on tho the waters of farm creek he ile C C rich euga engaged ed and taught school through the winter and in tho the spring ho he made rails to fence forty acres of land and hia his f father broke twenty acres of land and raised sufficient to sustain the family in august 1830 he lie returned to the state of indiana to collect some money and returned to illinois in in i october ad and purchased 80 acres of land which secured their improvements august 1831 lyman wight and john carroll preached the gospel e in that neighborhood which lio lie believed at the time but was not then baptized as mcarn wiil wight t and carroll remained but a few day days and passed on to missouri which place was designated as zion by the lati ter day saints shortly after two I 1 elders geo M and daniel cathcart from missouri ri commenced preaching and laisiu raising prophet he ile remained in Kirtland until about the of august during this time attending many meetings and councils ho ile left kirtland for home about aug ast ast 1st and landed at rising sun indiana where ho be rem remained ined till the tile let of oct visiting his friends and relatives in the vicinity where w here lie was brought brou glit up he ile was 11 quite bite sick a portion of the tile time while here and was divinely healed to the of his friends ho ile arrived at his home in illinois on oil the 2 alth of october he ile remained at home duri during n the remainder of fall and winter continued at intervals laboring in in in the ministry until april 1835 when he be went on a mission to the north part of the state at dupage cook county he lie assisted in in baptizing several and two public debates wit with hithe the methodists and made many friends he ile left for home preaching several times on the pray way and arrived nov 3rd ard where ho remained and labored in the regions 1 round about until jan 26 1836 1830 when he lie in company with levi P tomlinson started for kirtland on a mission traveling through the towns of mackinaw stouts grove bloomer grove big grove danville eugene terre haute green river branch orleans livona and greenville arriving at new albany indiana march 1836 holding 30 mec meetings tings 2 debates and traveling miles on oil foot he ile left albany and went to louisville ky and took steamer for rising sun ind where ho lie landed on oil tile of march arch ho ile remained veiling hh friends and relatives in switzerland county ind and boone county ky until april 3rd ard during which time lie held beld 10 meetings 0 he ile also whited the branch 0 of f the church I 1 in cincinnati on oil the ath took passage on oil he steamer big bone springs boone county kentucky remained in boone and adjoining counties kentucky and arid switzer land and adjoining counties indiana holding 51 meetings 4 debate debates and baptizing 5 persons started for home ou on the of sept going down the ohio to the mouth then up the mississippi to st louis then thence coup up illinois river to pekin arrived at home on the ath of october on oil the of october he lie started in company with lyman wight for missouri to buy land and nov I 1 ast 1st st went to Oal haldwell dwell county where lie bought 80 acres of land of mr odell three miles south of far par west and arid entered 80 acres more on oil the started home where lie arrived dec ath he ile spent the winter ot of 1836 v 7 i preaching 0 in and adjoining counties and baptized quite returned home again in 1862 during this mission lie was with elders geo Q cannon and lyman in ili the presidency of tile churches in europe in the spring of 1863 lie went to bear lake lako valley and settled in paris ho ile has continued to reside there from that time to his demise he ile has with others been the means of building many nourishing settlements net ts in that region he ile served fi several everal terms i in I 1 I 1 the tile legislative assembly and filled other important positions of public trust on sunday october 1880 apostle rich was smitten with paralysis from which ho be
