Show A NEW DECISION the utah commissioners interpretation of heelon 8 A good deal of speculation lias has been rife us as to the extent to which he be eighth section of the edmunds ill is to be applied in determining he legal votes for the elections in utah the oath recently prescribed oy the utah commissioners contains it i few words which appear to conent he ille operation oi of the excluding section to mormons cormons Mor mons only and let non tion cormons Mor mona mons with more than cne one woman etc go to the polls and be elected to office in undisturbed indulgence A difre reat light is thrown on this abject by the latest decision of the utah cumms commission aion which was taken in consequence of arn A C bryan registrar for juab county having submitted to the commission the following if it in any case a man has lias violated the lairs laws of the united united states prohibiting bigamy or polygamy and is not at the time he lie may apply apply to be registered as a voter acqua actually ly ai living with ith two or more 1 I 0 o uld he e or should lie not be deemed a legal applicant far registration the commission after due consideration make the following order that any person male or female who in violation of the act of congress approved july let 1882 sec see revised statutes united states or who in violation of section 1 of the act of congress approved march 1882 entitled an act to amend section of the revised statutes Statute of the united states in reference to bigamy and for other purposes has entered into anny of the relationships described in ill section 8 of said last named act P is is not a it I 1 legal egal voter and cannot be registered and the secretary of this commission is directed to communicate this order to mr bryan and all other registration officers will take due notice of this order for the full understanding 9 0 of f this action and I 1 its consequences the commission append to their decision the text of section eight of the edmunds bill that no polygamist bigamist bica biga mist inist or any person cohabiting with more than one woman and no woman cohabit adv of the persons describe de scriba as aforesaid in this section in p adv territory or other place over which the united states has exclusive jurisdiction shall be entitled to voto vote at any gny elec election tiou held in any such te territory rr i or place or be eligible for election or appointment to or bo be entitled to hold adv office or place of trust honor or emolument in under or for any such territory or place or under the united states it will be noticed that there is nothing said of the marriage relation in ill the text of that section |
