Show NOVEMBER STORMS the elections of the month of november 1882 promise to be of great moment in the political poli ticul history of the country it requires no political I 1 vennor to forecast the storms which will sweep over more inore than I 1 state demolish demolishing irig more than one idol that has been held in reverence but is found nut out in ita its inefficiency the two leading states of the union are tho the two in which the tidal waves of popular opinion will run the highest and will probably swamp and wreck not a few statesmen and politicians who heretofore have kept their heads high and their pockets deep in new york and arid pennsylvania the situation is such as it lias has not been for long years and it is difficult to foretell what will rise from the seething 1 bottom of the witcha cauldron cauldren caul dron of party politics I 1 in new york state we see the I 1 7 two great political parties split into 1 factions on the republican side there is is the deep and wide chasm between stalwarts Stal warts and half breeds the chasm which lias has net not even been f filled by the sacrifice ofa of a president of the united states but not en enough ough in having divided the republican ranks into two hostile wings the stalwarts Stal warts themselves are disunited if not di disorganized zed for several weeks s an angry quarrel has bas been going ou in tho the party press over alleged charges of attempted bribery by conkling in the interest 1 of jay gould these charges appear te to have originated with gov cornell who is contemplating to run for election reelection re and who though hitherto considered a friend and adherent if not rather a creature and I 1 tool of conkling Gon kline proves to be in ill bitter antagonism to the curly roscoe the new york times is especially bitter in its assaults on conkling and defense of cornell while especially the democratic organs such as the world and the sun come to the rescue of the chief of the stalwarts Stal warts and make cornell out anything but a gentleman and I 1 honest man these lings arc are endangering the success of the republicans 0 Fre greatly atly but if we here have confusion I 1 ion in the democratic ranks we meet confusion worse confounded no less than are in in the field claiming to be tho the ex of the political creed of Jefre jefferson and the irving hall or tilden the tammany or I 1 I 1 john kelly and the county democracy with john kelly as a competitor for democratic laurels or ll loot oot the prospects of the I 1 party that elected tilden governor I 1 in 1874 and president in 1876 seem to be seriously jeopardized and if I 1 the democrats can possibly spare the tammany votes which are ever for salo sale in the market they will greatly k improve their condition and strengthen their position in a few weeks both parties will hold their state conventions and I 1 then it will bo be seen whether and on a what terms the discordant elements can unite merging minor differences in view of the greater importance of I 1 party success if united tho the democrats have the odds in their favor but if disunited they are certain 1 again to suffer the inglorious 0 fate of 1 1878 and 1880 I 1 in the keystone state the political 1 1 arena is presenting the spectacle of a prize ring to point at all the party organizations large and small important and arid insignificant would take every fin finger ger on both hands the schism among the republicans public ans of the empire state has I 1 contagiously affected the republicans of pennsylvania A good many of them have long since become tired of tho the bossism of the I 1 camerons and they have risen in I 1 res resolute blute revolt against the ring rule the independent party has been formed it haa has formulated a it program established a platform and nominated a ticket which ia is c i ded to bo be an unusually i strong trong one likely to get the support of many 1 stalwarts Stal Q tal warts ani even ef of democrats 1 the latter party does not appear to IQ be troubled with any faction spirit but its strength is much more of a local nature than lofstate of state importance an ce the backers lobor I 1 I 1 1 union prohibitionists and all the other small fry only tend to complicate matters and swell the storm that is rising bearing in ltv the deep significance of the november elections of this year on oil the presidential campaign two years lieuwe nv we will not be surprised at tho the anxiety and arid energy displayed un on all sides thus if the democrats in new york unite in good faith and carry tho the state ticket it is to 1 that chester A arthur will bo be the last in the first series of republican presidents ot of the united states |
