Show suppressing CRIME that vice and crime of every description are increasing and permeate all grades of society from the mast refined to the lowest strata and that they arc are spreading throughout the land with fearful rapidity with the most direful results is a lamentable fact crime is reduced to a science and in many instances the best educated persons are the greatest adepts in rascality and succeed frequently when others as frequently fail in all kind of villainy there is an organization in new york yok which is ii a very excellent institution ution it is the society for the suppression office of vice and within a few years past tast it has accomplished a great amount of good in this direction and deserves not only the sympathy but also the hearty operation cooperation co of all who deplore the existence and desire to see the abolition of crime this society in its report rt at the last annual meeting made a very fine exhibit it showed that in several reveral years previous ts to 1881 twenty seven thousand five hundred pounds of books and sheet literature of an immoral character were seized and destroyed by the tile proper officers but last year only twenty pounds of that kind of reading matter could be found hence either the venders benders were able to elude the vigilance of the officers or the traffic had diminished to a most remarkable extent we hope it is tile latter chirina the seven years cars previous cd d but last year NY only twenty live could be discovered by the detectives of the society in the year 1880 fourteen thousand five hundred hund d red stereotype plates were discovered and destroyed while lat ast year not any could be found in n 1880 immoral objects were seiz ed but last year not any year before last there were immoral circulars pamphlets obscene songs poems etc seized and destroyed st as against i in n 1881 many of the filthy articles were addressed to ladies and young girls at schools colleges colle and various other educational institutions and some at their residences we are pleased to learn leam that through the vigilance of the detective a great number of arrests have been made and many of those persons who were engaged in this befit nefarious traffic were brought to condign officers arc are also making raids on lotteries and various other gambling institutions il el fifty of these kinds of places were abated by them last year mr Co comstock Oom stock who is looked upon as the head and front odthe of the society says about one half of the criminals who are arrested fer for being engaged in this obscene business in new york city are youths of 21 years of ago age and under and about on one e fourth of this same class of offenders arc are not over but man many y are under sixteen years old sir mr comstock tp also says these young youn criminals receive their first i inspirations pi rations from reading the half dimo dime periodicals and noels novels which nil fill the minds with criminal fancies one thing which is specially to be regretted is that while the society I receives the hearty operation cooperation co and much efficient aid from f rom many quarters in their labors for the stamping out crime the tile officers meet with much opposition and hindrance from the police force of the cit city Y of new york whereas they should receive the strongest support I from f rom those who are appointed and paid to be con serva servitors tors of tho the public peace the tile society has received considerable support from the press though not as als much as it deserves tho the christian at work a weekly paper published in new york city commenting upon tho the opposition the society meets from the police says that mr comstock should publicly charge that our blue coated police lice com comprising an a army of 2500 men esch receiving sieb 1200 per year with ita its rounds men 41 scap ta s int in inspectors spec sPee tors detectives detec tires up to commis that sir comstock should publicly charge that these instead of being his most efficient help as they i should be are his strang strongest gest anlap antagonists o n raises the question whether the best police in the world is really a very desirable article after all s I this is a sad comment on oil the tile i boasted civilization of tho the largest most populous city in the united states and the much vaunted purifying and cleva elevating ting influences of modern christianity in america and yet this same class of men talk of regenerating utah let them first cleanse the inside of their own platter in giving its views of wb what at it considers the only adequate punishment of those parties who are found to be engaged in in the obscene vicious employment the christian at work mork says there is ono one thing i in connection with this matter wa which bieh might we well 11 engage the attention of our state legislature when it has divided spoils and elected officers and that is to eive consideration to a proposition to restore the whipping post with a view to applying tho the lash to the backs of those slimy creatures who penetrate young ladies seminaries with their obscene books and pictures and their circulars inai inviting ing tho recipients to luxurious apar apartments ments in our city hells if a bull hide thong laid on the tile backs of these wretches until the tile vertebra were brought in sight should prove to be the only means of suppressing them and their infamy vc we should be in favor of suppression fi first last and all tho tile time and we will add that as 03 what is sauce for the goose is sauco sauce for tho the gander all those who in in any way aid and abet those slimy rogues to circulate their pernicious CiOUS literature whether they bo be police officers or private individuals arc are pes crl crin minis tinis and should participate in tho the punishment inflicted on the tile principal actors in tho the fearful drama |
