experiencing CX perien cing a decline in ilia his physical health which was foreboding his early dissolution today to day wo nye are under the tile painful necessity of recording the death of the universally esteemed este emid gentleman for the particulars tic ulars of the deplorable event and a short sketch of the life and character of the deceased we arc are indebted to the deseret news at eight friday morning in city creek canyon about a mile above the E empire mill bishop A 0 of the word serenely breathed his last besides numerous mem members hers of his family he lie was by a number of faithful friends among whom were T V williams william joshua Alid midgley gley L hook john druce M 1 lenzi iva ili s faithful attendant who bad waited upon him with the most moat unremitting and assiduous care dr W H 11 sharp was also there in the demise ef of bishop the community have lost an honest intelligent and capable man but we arc are satisfied that our present loss is his eternal lie was afflicted was a cancerous tumor for the removal of which he underwent two very severe operations and during the first he came near neRr dying the surgeons s who have attended him have been of opinion from the beginning Og inning that the case was hopeless his blood behig necessarily in a poisonous condition but he never gave up hope of recovery himself until within the last few days waa was appointed a traveling elder and spent some time preaching in his native country in that capacity undergoing ing man many y hardships for the truths truth sake in his early youth he be emigrated to the united states and bottled in st louis q where he remained several years and removed from that city to which place and at florence nebraska he be conducted a successful mercantile business while on the frontiers he lie aided general H S eldredge for four ye years a rs in the conduct of tte the emigration business of the church he arrived in salt lake city in 1859 bringing with him over the great plains several wagon loads of general merchandise with which he lie commenced business subsequently he established a chemical manufacturing n laboratory in sugar house I 1 ward u ad g an and engaged in tho the production of white lead sulphur and other articles the building in which this business was conducted at a latter date was transformed into a flouring floering flou ring mill the next occupation oce in will which h he be engaged being t that it of a miller ho he was subsequently employed by the lato late president brigham young to conduct his outside private bu business sirim he afterwards entered again in the line of a general merchant and giving that up occupied the position of sup superintendent er in of the grocery department of the tho Z C I 1 M 1 I I 1 L when that branch of the institution was conducted in the old constitution building his next mccu occupation aaion was of an official character t being installed at the city hall as police Jus justice tico a position he occupied from august 1874 aill the time of his demise he ile was a member of the tile city council for sixteen years bavin having been first elected from sugar house in 1866 when that section constituted the fifth municipal ward of salt lake L la k e city cit after his removal from sugar house to reside in salt lake he lie was elected alderman from the fourth precinct in june 1877 at the time of the general organization of stakes and wards by direction of the late president byoun B young brother was ordained a bishop ishop and set apart to preside in that capacity over tho the ward of tills this city a position he filled at the time of his death probably no man in utah did more toward the silk producing and manufacturing interests in this territory than bishop he was one of the most successful producers in this pan part of the country countr y and took a deep interest inthe in industry even during the first part of the illness that carried him off ote the
