Show gathered to aw fathers tho funeral service of elder david nelson sr nere held atthe family residence on friday sept 29 ali A I largo large concourse of friends were present on the occasion the services were conducted by bishop winslow parr farr after singing ng rayer er was offered ered by E elder ider joseph arn lall elder lorin farr then delivered a discourse suitable for tho the occasion he ile spoke of the ille decenso as an honorable upright man the speaker speaker had bad been acquainted with him for many years a and rid could testify that ho he was always truthful firm in the faith of the gospel and was ever ready to do all that he could to promote the interests of the kingdom of nf god and his people father nelson had bad suffered ered much fur for the gospels sake but lie never swerved from the truth he remained true and faithful to the principles which ho he had received from the tile heavens through the tile prophet pet joseph smith in the last days father ather nelson had filled the meas ure of his days and had been gath ered to his fathers he was like a chock shock of corn fully ripe for the gar tier odthe of the grand blaster he had entered into rest and will remain in th espirit world until the trum sound and the dead in christ s shall hall rise first he will then come forth to inherit the earth with the redeemed of all nations president D H 11 Pee bishop IV farr also addressed the meeting in dorsing the remarks of elder farr and and they spoke in terms of commend commendation atio on the life and aud character of the deceased at the conclusion of tho the addresses the choir san sang I another hymn and the services 1101 dosed ad with benediction by F middleton the remains were then taken to the cemetery and laid aw away to rest the deceased david gelson nelson wn WILI the thee son of jonathan and eunice S stone tone nelson he was born june etli 1801 shrewsbury worcester county Count yMass mass he was baptized into the church of jesus christ of latter day saints dec 2nd and 1833 by L elder der evan ba M green the same me day he was confirmed and or bained a priest by the same person on march oth 1836 he be was married to mary T Miller daughter of geo and alary miller of providence alj rhode island and tho the ramo satie year he gathered with the saints to kirt blandf ohio and therece there he was or bained an elder under the hands of father joseph smith after remaining in kirtland for some timo time he lie removed in tho the fall of 1838 to jackson county missouri but on arriving there he found the saints had been driven out of that county by an edict of governor boggs he ile removed to jacksonville ill and remained there four years and a half in 1843 he be went tu to nauvoo in nauvoo while guarding the temple retook betook he took a severe could which h culminated in the lo 10 loss of the sight of his left eye elder nelson remain remain ed in nauvoo until 1846 when he and his family were expelled with the saints from their beloved city while in nauvoo he was ordained a member of the quorum of seventies and subsequently a high priest from nauvoo he be went to st louia loui mo where on the ath of july 1849 death deprived him of his wife at the age of 32 years in 1852 elder nelson left st louis for utah where he lie arrived Sept he ile fir first firt t settled at kaya kays ward and after two years and a half residence in that place he lie came to ogden where he lie continued to reside until his demise in the winter of 1872 in company wilh with hid his son james if nelson he went on a mission to his native land and was warmly received by many of the friends of his boyhood and other acquaintance acquaintances in 1850 bp was married again to ass miss sarah brown of bedford england by his first wife ho he had four sons son aud rud two daughters by his second wife he be had bad two sous sons and two daughters he leaves a widow five children twenty five grandchildren and three great grandchildren besides a host of friends to mourn his loss |
