Show sorghum for feed kansas correspond Corres correspondence gentleman u a ce of the country I have never raised sorghum for the purpose of syrup maki making b but ti I have raised it two years for feed and and consider it superior to any other forage plant I have am c ever raised in any state for that purpose timothy timot liy and clover not excepted I prepare the ground the same as for any other crop and drill with roy ray wheat drill hall balfa halfa a bushel of seed theatre to the acre I sow it from april to august first if it grows strong and tall 01 I cut it with a revolving rake reaper and after allowing it to wilt for several days I bind and shock it in large shocks until dried then stack and salt alt it the same as corn stalks it is is finer and shorter I cut it with a mower and cure it the same as hay bay it takes a long along time to t cure and d dry r out otherwise it will heat and spoil the stack should belong be long and narrow the crop should stand until ripe enough for syrup before cutting it will not bleach and spoil on tho the ground like hay bay or grain many let it stand without cutting and feed iced it on the ground and cattle and sheep will ivill eat it clean even the butts and roots leaving nothing I am of the opinion that the large coarse stalks are tho the best for working work g animals my horses are working and driving on half rations of grain rice corn corna andare and arc doing better than when I fed them hay bay and corn th tho seed is equal to corn and will produce as much to the acre I think when well cleaned it wei weighs bs sixty pounds to the struck busfield bus bushel fiel it ia is superior to any other dry feed for cows our dry climate and winds make it easy to cure and it stands drought better than any crop except the rico rice corn |
