Show A bI DISASTER GASTER PREVENTED an lt birdin fire in the ZV id it N dipped in alie ind last night the citizens of ogden came near w witnessing ian ng a conflagration which might t h have e been very destructive M in ita its nature at re at the vcr Z C M I about 12 the watchman on duty heard the crack jim ling of fire in tr alie le upper part of the bui building ding lie ile went at once to the second story where re ili in a private office fronting main street he discovered the mom room was full of smoke and wid a 11 fire was burning the joist under tinder the floor the watchman went with all speed to the residence of mr S W sears seam the manager and informed him of the matter mr scars repaired at once with the watchman to the scene of the accident and the two commenced with axes to cut away the floor the smoke however waa was so dense that the watchman could not endure it lie ile therefore went fo for r water while sir mr soars i continued cutting away the chinks blanks in a short timet timothey tim ethey bey we rejoined by aba brother of mr scare seam the bookkeeper and 11 S young cashier of the first fira national bank who were driven back by the smoke but commenced to carry water to extinguish the fire they were now joined by a force of operators from the western union telegraph office lre mr it A wells policeman J M brown watchman thoa thos luty and others the fire was ws now soon got under control but it was not until about in the morning that the destroying element was entirely subdued we are tire pleased to learn that the damage is ia comparatively light however had it not been bean for the timely discovery by the irate watchman limar the results woul bouldin wo dinall all probability have been disastrous dia about a week ago a fire grate was vas placed in the office and it ia is thought the fire originated 11 by some hot ashes falling between the brick wall and the concrete under the grate work their way to to the joist of the floor and ignatin igniting g the woodwork with the results a above lve named word was sent to salt lake city to wm jennings esq vice dent odthe of the parent relation to the accident he ile came to ogden by the morning train after examining i in the matter iatter n lie considered that no one connected with the ogden branch was to blame for what had occurred |
