Show REPUBLICANS LOOK TO YOUR GUNS i- The city Republican executive committee o Ogden has called a primary of the party for October 10, at Avhich time all Republicans are invited to cast their ballots for the men who shall be the part3's choice at the, primary elections. Do the pc6plc understand the meaningiof, a .Republican primary? Many people have asked so many questions thatwe fear some do not understand the situation at all. Under the new law, Ogden City will not have a mayor and city council after January 1, but will have three qommissioners, who will take the- place of the present city officials. One of the commissioners will be known as mayor and the three commissioners will perform the duties of the present'mayor and city council. On October 24 a primary election will "be held, at which election elec-tion all the candidates will be on one ticket without the name of any party or other designation that may indicate to what party the candidates belong. All the candidates for maj-or commissioner will be together, one name following the other, thus: FOR MAYOR COMMISSIONER. John Jones. James Johnson. , b y Henry "Wolf. ' , - fc VUf'- Steven Smith. ' , '.-.; v" Simon Brown. The voter will place his cross after the name of his choice. Likewise will appear the names for other officers. The two persons per-sons receiving the highest vote for each office will be the only two names that can be voted for on election day. It may turn out that a Socialist and a Democrat will receive the highest vote for mayor at the primary election. If so there will be no Republican candidate that can legally be voted for on election day Now in order that the Republicans will have a candidate on November No-vember 7 the Republican committee has called a primary election of Republicans only, at which primary the Republican will select their own candidate to be voted for at the regular primary election provided pro-vided by law. f ( "l 1 1 1 '.' jrnJi.jS-i Instead of having a Republican convention -with delegates from each district, the Republicans will vote their choice for each office instead of electing delegates to pick the candidates. This, we think, makes the matter plain. Every Republican who wants his name considered needs only to hand his name to the secretary or chairman of the Republican committee, stating which office he desires and he will be placed on the ticket, provided this is done before 5 o'clock p. m., Saturday, September 30, 1911. If any person does not seek office and his friends want him to run, 25 Republicans can request that his name be placed before the Republican primaries, providing such Republican does not object to the use of his name. Here is the opportunity now for the people to have their own say about who shall be the Republican candidates. There will be no packed conventions of delegates now. The people's choice alone will win. jj Originallj, it was not even intended to have the parties select I candidates. But that plan was abandoned when the governor would not consent to the "recall" in the new commission form of govern- j raent. '. Three men to run the city without the ''recall" gives them un- limited power without the people being able to call them to an accounting ac-counting before the term of office expires. Therefore, i( is the duty ' of some political party to be responsible for tho men elected as commissioners com-missioners of Ogden, To elect throe men without party responsibilities will give them power to do as they please, without restrictions. If flic "recall" were a part of the commission form of government, as it is in other cities where- the commission form has been adopted, then the people peo-ple could "recall' the commissioners. That alone would make them responsive to the best interests of the people'. Without the "recall" the parties should place their choice in the field! l Let people of all parties take hold of the matter promptly and j give Ogden threo good men as commissioners, ' , |
