MURPHY. 4- 4- 4- Tho general primary to select candidates can-didates for OGden's first municipal election under tho new commission law" was held yesterday and failed to create the Interest that was expected, lho total vote falling far below that which was cast for mayor two years ugo and also below that which wns cast at tho liquor election last June. A total of 4,577 votes were cast In the city at yesterday's primary, while 7.7G4 votes 'were polled at the liquor election last Juuo and the candidates for mayor two years ago received a total of 0.35C votes. In spite of the rather small voto at ihe nrlmary there wero cxceptlonnllv good showings madcyiby at least threo candidates and the general showing for the Socialist candidates was probably the greatest Biirprlse at the primary. The three candidates who made exceptionally ex-ceptionally good showings were Heber Scowcroft for mayor commissioner, William D VnnDyke, Jr , for auditor and William H. Reeder, Jr., for municipal mu-nicipal judge. The latter rolled up a magnificent total of 2.52.1 votes against Judge John D. Murphy. Ileber Srowcroft will go into the general election with an advantage of more than 400 pi'marv votes over his competitor, A G. Fell It wns quite generally conceded that Fell would recelvo tho highest vote at the pri-marj. pri-marj. Instead of which he ran second in the list of four candidates, John M. Wagner, the Socialist candidate receiving re-ceiving a total of 75C votes and finishing fin-ishing In third place, wh'lc Councilman Council-man Charles J. Humphris received little more than half this number. With an even dozen candidates In tho race for the two-year term commissioner, com-missioner, the voto wns well distributed, distrib-uted, Joseph C. Nye leading all competitors com-petitors wltli n total of 1.18.1, whllo Carl Allison w'll land a place on tho flnnl bnllot with 1.041 votes. C. E. Monagnn, the Socialist candidate, finished fin-ished third In this race with a total of 575 votes, this being the lowest vote received by any of tho Socialist candidates on the ticket. T. Samuel Browning led in the race for commissioner for the four-year term. His opponent at the general election will bo Thomas E, Browning, who was closelv pursued in tho primary pri-mary race by William B. Murphy, the Socialist Tho fnllurc of Fred P. Holllngs-worth, Holllngs-worth, candidate for auditor, to make the race that was expected of him is probably responsible for the vote received by William D. VanDyke, Jr., wo received l,94f, this being the rccond highest vote received by any cand'dato. Wallace Foulger will be VnnDykc's opponent, his total vote being 1,209. Holllngsworth finished fourth, "W. M. Wesley, the Socialist candidate' polling CFS votes. Politicians who are credited with knowing the conditions in this city are still guess'ng in un otfort to discover dis-cover the answer to William II. Reader's Rea-der's remarkablo showing. It must bo admitted that It Is rather hard to explain when a candidate who is accorded ac-corded nono too brilliant chances In the final election receives the highest vote of any candidate and leads his opponent by almost 1,000 votes. This was tho romarkable showing made by Reeder agalnat Judge John D. Murphy, Mur-phy, their respective votes being 2,-523 2,-523 nnd 1,705. If there was n lack of Interest In the balloting yesterday there was no lack of lt lu the efforts to learn tho results. Before the polling places had closed people began to Inquire the results and by the tlmo tho first local returns were coming In a crowd of Bavcral hundred persons had congregated congre-gated in front of the Standard Examiner Exam-iner ofTlce. Tho completo result was not definitely known until after 11 o'clock, and many peoplo votnalned to henr the final figure. - oo |
