Show H THE GROCERY COMBINE GETTING ANGRY. H Somo of our grocery friends wish us all kinds of bad luck. Ono H said we ought to bo "tarred and feathered;" another said, "Some- H body ought to shoot" us; ever so many wished another paper would H start up; and about all in the combine said sQmobody was a "darned H . 'liar." If we were to tell half of all reported to us, it would fill this H paper several times. H We are awful (7) sorry for the combine. We admit it was rather H a hard jolt they received, but not near so hard a jolt as the poor con- H sumer, and especially the mother of a houseful of children, received when the pocketbook was empty and the children cried for food; not H near so hard a jolt as the poor working man received when his wife H and children were sick and nurse hire and medicine took all his sav- H -ings and, when he tried to run a small bill at the grocery store until pay H day, he was confronted with his name on the black list, and informed H that ho must pay what he owed at some other store before he could H get $5 worth of groceries. Jolts like that go clear through the mar- H row bone of a fellow. But the jolts the trust has received only H touch the pocketbook. Still, that is all the trust has in view. H The fact tha? the trust does not own a newspaper is not bad for H them at all, for the trust can talk to the public for much less money H 'in this paper than it could to pay the 'expenses of their own paper. H But if the trust really wants a paper, we will be liberal and sell them H one for 50 per cent less than cost. But this price will be good only to H the grocery combine. We would sell to them for less than to anybody H I just to have a chance to prove from the combine's own sheet that the H trust is a real live thing. H We have been asked if the Ward-Boice Co. of Rock Springs is H closing out its stock of groceries, as it would be unfair to ask Ogden H grocery stores to sell as cheap as somebody does who is selling out H at a sacrifice. H No, dear reader, the Rock Springs people say they are there to H stay, and the prices quoted are just everyday prices offered to any- kkH bodv who wants to buv the p-oods arlvprt.isr1 H We also have been told that some of the Ogden grocers claim H we have made mistakes in quoting the Rock Springs people. We have H therefore compared tho figures again and find them absolutely cor- H rect, and we republish those prices. The first two columns give the H prices of two different Ogden grocery stores, the third column gives H the Rock Springs prices, and the fourth row of figures gives the per cent that the Ogden stores aro higher than the Rock Springs prices. We are advised that some of the grocers 'already have made small reductions, but the reductions must be greater and permanent. The Ogden prices we published wero secured direct from two of our best grocery stores and were secured by two prominent citizens of Ogden. The writer of this article has even paid more on some of the items quoted. The best way to dissolve the Combine is to havo tho judge of the Second Judicial District court of Utah call a grand jury to investigate investi-gate the matter. We promise somo very interesting testimony enough to prove the existence of the "combine." |
