Show SENATOR ROOT OPPOSES POPULAR ELECTION SENATORS Washington, Feb. 10. Opposing all suggestions looking to a change in tho manner of electing United States senators, sen-ators, Mr. Root of New York, today addressed the senate on the resolution providing for election by direct vote of the people. Mr. Root said he would not have senators elected by direct vote, and, if they were to be so elected, would not have control'of such' elections transferred from congress to the various vari-ous state legislature.
