imported democratic speakers confines himself to tho subject of irrigation that will 1 commend itself to those democrats who irrigate every time they are invited expert smythe says he would rather dig ditches in ahe semiarid states than graves la the philippines but if he continues such remarks he will succeed in digging graves in utah for the office holding ambitions of many a democrat the salt lake city newspapers made any amount of a over the escape of one crazy man in the streets of that city they could coop up an entire room full of crazy mea by sur j un amerlean Amerl can aparto headquarters jl i the production of pig iron has increased from less than tons in 1894 to tons la 1903 yet the exportation of pig iron in 1903 was only about tons indicating that practically all of the enormously in creaked production wag utilized at home for the manufacture of finished products of iron and steel it is obvious to one who has been in england a short time that something is radically wrong with the british dairy industry that the english themselves realize that something is out of joint Is evidenced by recent discussions and the arrival at the conclusion hat english dairying needs cooperative organization in th e five years 1898 1902 the average annual number of workpeople affected by labor disputes in great britain was and the average duration of the disputes was days in tho five years 1893 1897 the corresponding average for workpeople affected was and for the duration of disputes days the quantity ot wheat retained for consumption in the united states never reached bushels prior to 1880 in 1881 Is passed the line and slowly increased with the population in 1899 it was over bushels in 1902 it exceeded and in the fiscal year ending june was bushels a greater total than in any preceding year republican SUCCESS ASSURED from dails from cache from away down south in dixie and from the best posted politicians in salt lake where the un americans are making so much noise comes the cheering news that the success of the national and state ticket Is assured in utah this Is as it should be the people of this state would have no excuse to offer if they now turned from republicanism to democracy after the recent sore financial and industrial depression brought about by the blundering n competency of grover cleveland and his democratic mis managers and which depression bung like a pall over not this section alone but over the entire country aa well from 93 to 97 and which was lifted and an era of unexampled prosperity begun almost with abo inauguration 0 president me kanley and which has continued to the very present and which will be assured for years if the republican party is continued in power this Is an object lesson in practical politics which needs no embellishment in words or letters it is cold hard logical history and t can neither be ignored with safety nor answered with a sneer we have tree schools in utah her people are prosperous now they deabre to continue BO the people of the united states arp pot going athla yar to be misled by Democratic utah Is going to keep in line with progress with prosperity she Is going to support the party that is friendly to the interests of the west she is not going democratic to satisfy the desire for vengeance on the part of certain un americans neither is eho going to be bullied into voting the demo ticket by powers and other well meaning but misguided democrats utah is all right DONT LIKE SPEECH the salt lake tribune and herald both jump upon mayor giesmann GI asmann and his logan speech with both feet first of all both papers misrepresent the ogden mayor both papers exaggerate and add to the mayors remarks to such an extent as to lose sight of the mayors real words for instance mayor giesmann GI asmann stated that he voted tor senator kearns as he had only d choice between arthur drown and thomas kearns that the former had betrayed the ogden mayor when the latter was a candidate for congress and therefore he could not vote for brown and hence cast his vote for thomas kearns tor united states senator he said that he felt responsible tor his vote and believed it elected thomas kearns would serve the state as well as brown that he had been on friendly terms with the senator until the senators paper attacked reed smoot and showed signs ot bolting the republican ticket and the american party was about to be organized that senator kearns had repeatedly asked the ogden mayor what he could do tor him and offered to get him a federal appointment in ano philippine islands it it was wanted in fact mayor giesmann GI asmann stated that senator kearns had so tar as it was possible tor him to do so shown an appreciation of the vote cast tor him the mayor had no personal complaint to make against senator kearns he also said that the senator had repeatedly shown the mayor kindness by looking after the interests of the mayors friends senator kearns surely could not object to the foregoing but ahls is what the tribune says the mayor bald in logan saturday night special to tho tribune LOGAN oct 16 senator kearns has asked me more than a hundred times to accept big offices under the general government he has asked me to go as united states minister to the philippines the last pait shows the animus of the tribune everybody knows there is no united states minister to the philippines and the tribune thinks it was cute to make t appear that mayor giesmann GI asmann did not know the philippine islands belonged to the united states again the tribune publishes the following he giesmann GI asmann said the american party was organized by the advice of democratic leaders and nade tho statement that at that particular time frank cannon judge powers and senator kearns were closeted for tareo successive nights now mr giesmann GI asmann never said aay of the kind but he did ask what it meant when the newspapers were publishing such statements and charging them to be true the salt lake herald the democratic echo of tho tribunes american party policy says the democrats regret that mr agias gias mann can not speak in every precinct in cache county well since the herald and the democrats request it arrangements range ments have been made for the ogden mayor to go back to cache county and he left for the adorth today at noon the standard hopes the democrats will continue to be pleased with the ogden mayors speeches WOUNDED BIRDS from the vast amount ot fluttering that has been done since the first publication li of chairman accusation ot a deal and understanding between ex senator cannon chairman taggart and the un american party one would suppose that the republican chairman had discharged both barrels of a shot gun into a whole covey of birds after the campaign is over and we have leisure we shall write a book with ibe title denials that do not deny and shall insert some of the most ingenious of those offered in relation to this deal as models for the present wo shall be content to briefly refer to some of them and then ask the people to use their judgment aa to whether or not they are sufficient to clear the skirts of the suspected first comes chairman bamberger of the democratic state committee and says n effect that he had no knowledge of or part in any such deal but the wily chairman had the shrewdness to stop hero he abes not say anything in condemnation of this grossly un movement he contents himself with saying that he was not an accessory before the fact but does not deny that he Is a receiver of or that he Is willing to receive stolen goods smooth man Is senator bamberger a very clever man next comes judge powers the man who absented himself from the state ostensibly to rest his voice prank tho boards and posing as a good mormon sent out his wilful misrepresentations over the united stated tho judge seems to have recovered his voice but to havo lost some ot his suavity and usual good managers man aers hear him as reported in the herald in reference to the statement made by chairman spry of the republican state committee that I 1 am a party to a deal with hon frank cannon by which he was to join tha american party I 1 want to say that so far as I 1 m concerned the story Is a ho made aut of whole cloth and having made this denial any man who repeats the story as true Is in plain english a willful liar I 1 have no patience with such campaign methods next comes tho atar of the comedy our own and only frank listen to him senator cannon waived whatever objection he may have to figuring in the newspapers sufficiently to permit his making another statement as follows the statement for which chairman spry of te republican committee gives an unnamed authority is a falsehood from beginning to end the man who is responsible tor it Is a falsifier I 1 challenge chal lengo chairman spry to give the name of his informant lacking which he Is free to accept tor himself the responsibility tor the story which I 1 have above characterized and whose author I 1 have also above characterized wo ask those who are personally acquainted with agdens famous political acrobat to keep faces straight at the grotesque humor of the preface frank waived whatever objection he may have to figuring in the newspapers as it it were not the greatest gratification of his whole life to strut up and down upon the stage in the glare of the footlights paraded before the public an itching for notoriety consumes him ho would 0 course prefer to be lionized flattered made much of but it that were out of the quest ionas it seems now to be in utah he would sooner bo cursed than unnoticed the comes henry peery who is reported as follows national committeeman D H peery consented to figure to this extent 1 I am a member of the national democratic committee for utah and it the committee did anything concerning utah I 1 would be consulted the committee under its own rules could not and would not make any arrangements in regard to the campaign in biah without consulting me the committee has never suggested nor advised anything of this nature at any time I 1 defy those who are telling this story to produce a republican who could in any manner gain the confidence of the democratic national committee far from encouraging senator cannon to join the american party I 1 attempted to dissuade him when he notified me of his intention to join it will be observed that sir peery simply submits an opinion which is in fact that the national democratic committee would not have made such a deal ex capt through him we desire to say right here that no one would have accused henry peery of being mixed up in so shady a transaction mr peery is a gentleman who is a democrat solely because be believes in democratic principles moreover ha has large property holdings in and is interested in the the state it Is altogether probable that tom jt knew that he could not make use of mr peery in a case requiring such du city but through the good offices of senator dubois he was commended to the favor of one eliose political career might be likened to a serpents trail who had bean al things to all men who advertised the fact in a public interview as soon as he reached st louis that aa a delegate of the democratic party he cared nothing but tor party success and to that end he was willing to sur |
