Show GASOLINE LEAKS ARE DAMAGING TO THE PAVEMENT On the recommendation of Commissioner Commis-sioner Chris Flygare. superintendent l of streets., the police force will be re-I re-I quired to see to It that no gasoline 1 leaking automobiles are left standing I on paved streets There can be no law passed prohibiting the use of the ' streets by automobiles, but It Is the cipinlon of the city fathers that the owners can be required to prevent the discharge of quantities of gasoline while machines are standing at the curb or at other places where the street Is paved with asphalt. The reason for this action Is that gasoline destroys asphalt paving and it is feared by the commissioners that If something is not done much damage dam-age will result. A few days ago it was observed by Mayor Fell and also Commissioner Flygare that where gasoline gas-oline was deposited on the asphalt the surface became decomposed and could be readily scraped up with the heel of the shoe. This caused a further investigation and the commissioners are now fully convinced that there should be some action taken. To experiment on the effect of gasoline on asphalt. Mayor Fell took home a brick of "rock asphaltum" and covered it with gasoline. He discovered dis-covered that the effect was pronounced pronounc-ed and damaging Under tho infln ence of the fluid, the solid asphaltum brick decomposed to the extent thai with a blunt instrument the surface could be scraped away an eighth of an inch. oo |
