Show SCENES AT OF CHICAGO HOTEL chicago may 16 the hotel helene fifty third street was destroyed by fire early this morning the conflagration fla was very fierce and many ot the occupants were forced to jump from the windows to escape the names several persons were severely injured and ono or two are thought to have been killed the building Is a three story structure containing rooms all ot them being occupied the place was closed tor the night and the guests had to be aroused by tho police the fire Is close to the hyde park police station and every one in the station was sent to aid in rescuing the panic stricken occupants of the doomed hotel several policemen vero more or less burned in rescuing the inmates the alre burned so rapidly that most of the occupants were forced to climb out on the window sills as the stairways were cut off by the flames many of the victims were to jump before the firemen could put up their ladders four chambermaids are missing and it is supposed they perished in the flames among the seriously injured are helen joseph william F horan mrs elizabeth florence edward tarbox mrs f F taylor F W young man named lawson dr yeager man named morrow E B some of the above are so badly hurt that there are no hopes tor their recovery two persons were killed and fourteen were injured as a result of the alre five of the Injure il will probably die the dead are charlotte peterson dining room girl found in her room burned to a crisp lena surname not known to police found burned almost beyond recognition in room with miss peterson missing patterson a man last seen in hotel office at 11 last night seriously injured john horn terribly bruised leg broken will die S H mchaddon flesh partly burned from body will die E E tarvas burned recovery doubtful elizabeth florence internally injured and skull fractured recovery doubtful E B alien internally injured in jumping from third story window mrs T D alien back broken and internally injured jumped from third story window will die helen joseph badly bruised and overcome by smoke stella Neil chambermaid jumped from first floor overcome by smoke and injured internally L J maneli porter burnel about face miss sarau hutchinson a high school teacher injured in tailing aiom second floor james costin fireman cut by falling glass mrs bruce overcome by smoke thomas morgan policeman back injured mrs adelia lawson badly bruised the loss building and furnishings was james mcneill the hotel porter was the farst to warn the sleeping occupants of their danger ht carried helen joseph down a swaying ladder from the third floor and then amid cheers of the onlookers returned to the second floor where a woman was lying unconscious her clothing on fire he carried her to the window and dropped her into the arms of policeman wolf mcneill staggered back into the smoke A policeman mounted to the shoulders of a brother officer and clambering over the window ledge caught mcneill by the feet and dragged him from the room he soon recovered consciousness mrs bruce with one arm around her infant child was clinging with the other arm to the ledge of a second story window smoke was pouring out in smothering clouds three policeman carrying a blanket held taut rushed into the flames which were darting from the basement windows just in time to catch the woman and her child when they dropped mrs bruce was badly burned but had succeeded in protecting her baby so that not one hair of its head had been burned the rescues were nearly all accomplished before the firemen arrived the blaze spread ao rapidly that had the people in tho hotel been compelled to await the arrival ot the hook and ladder company more lives would have been lost policemen and others on the ground early however were able to secure ladders from a paint store near by and by this means saved many of the guests the alre started in the basement and spread with great rapidity but tor the heroic action ot porter mcneill every person in the building would undoubtedly have perished there was only one entrance to the building and the greater number of the guests had to escape as best they could through the windows |
