Show OBITUARY 8 we aro called upon to record th death of another veteran community builder of ogden city our old and well respected fellow citizen and friend thomas emmett very many places in ogdan city which once knew him well banow him no more until the gabriels trump shall wake his sleep ins dust again thomas Ern mett the son of john crumett and sarah boothman was born september 10 1827 at bownan lancashire england at the aee of 13 in the year of 1840 he became identified with the church of jesus christ of latter day saints he was baptized by stephen Lang he began hia official labors in the church soon after ho became a member filling successively the ollices of deacon teacher priest and elder and on the of november 1857 he was ordained an apostle of the seventies by president joseph young he was subsequently ordained a high priest these positions lie filled honorably and with integrity on the of february 1850 he married miss nancy hitchon james thomson esq maff istrate tied the nuptial knot tho issue of this marriage was seven eons and six daughters two boys and two girls have since died on january ast 1st 1851 he with his wife sailed aiom liverpool on the ellen en route for utah they reached new orleans on march 25 and thence proceeded to st louis mo on the 2nd of slay alie started west to leavenworth and rested there two weeks and then set out on their overland journey across the plains they arrived at salt september after a brief rest they came north and settled in ogden which place they mado their permanent home thomas emmett has assisted to make all the early improvements in and around ogden city among those which he rendered material aid were the ogden canal weber canal hooper canal building the the spanish wall for defense against the redskins red skins around the city he spent much timo and means in helping to effect these improvements prove ments his name is name is also inserted on the roll of those who opened canyon and building ogden river canyon road in addition to these he helped generally cene rally to make a number of water ditches streets roads etc he with hia family suffered the pinches of hard times incident to the hard winter and succeeding winter this of course was our common lot at that time as the grasshoppers ale up everything in tho shape of food for lean and beast when in tho fall of 1853 or spring of 1850 the ogden brass band was organized with walter baker as leader thomas emmett was elected its captain which position bo honorably filled for a number of years and hia retirement from it through failing health was the cause of deep regret for the boys were strongly attached to their captain his son R W is now leader of our now famous band thomas emmett participated in the move south and other movements of the people here on the alth of september 1882 he left home on a mission to great britain his health failed and in consequence lie was compelled to return home after baing absent less than ono year A little over two years past be had an attack of paralysis from which he never fully recovered from that timo his health gradually declined until his demise which occurred on february the let instant the funeral were held on sunday abo jtb in ahe second ward meeting house which however was far too small to accommodate all who desired to be present hundreds were compelled to remain outside the building the brass ban d was out in full force those who took active part in the services were apostle F D richards bishop who presided elders john richard and ralph douglass john ellison joseph hall thomas doxey joseph parry ephraim H nye they all spoke in terms of high commendation men dation of the life character and devotion to the cause of truth of their al most life long friend and brother they also administered words of consolation and comfort to the widow and bereaved offspring his present posterity consists of thirteen children twenty four arand children which are stift to build up his house and perpetuate his name millennial star please copy |
