convictions throughout her tier life her maternal solicitude for ford the material materi a 1 mental and spiritual welfare of her children unceasing un easing she lost no opportunity opportunity to impress upon their minds mind he the necessity of pure and honest e lives ot of making and leaving behind them an honorable record her patience in her long and terrible affliction and her unswerving faith in god were sublime and powerful testimonies of her goodness and integ lily aty and the nobility ol 01 her heart and soul tho tile speakers assured their listeners that these encomiums were too was dedicated by joseph hall and the mortal remains of rachel jane browning were lowered to their last resting place biographical the deceased was the beloved wife clifton 8 browning broning and the daughter of william and mary 11 II B middleton Midi leton she was born at far west caldwell county mo april 19 1833 sue she was the fourth child of her parents one sister older than herself having died previously her parents subsequently settled near nauvoo Iau illinois lu the spring of 1840 she with her bar parents para were expelled from nauvoo into the wilderness and after ead enduring dring the hardship and deprivations incident to a journey in ina a wilderness such as iowa was at that period she arrived at ciuni council 11 bluffed late ia in ibe the full fall of the tile bame same year increased and the a alarm larm soon spread to tho the neighbors who eoon soon gathered to the scene and rendered the inmates all the assist ence they could to escape rachel jane got out of the bouse house at first unharmed but she returned to rescue the others in which attempt ehe she was terribly burned about her arms neck and face the tho three other children did not escape but vero were burned to death their mother also was burned ed almost fatally on the 2nd and ot of october rachel jane middleton was married to clifton 8 brownin browning jonathan browning officiating on the same day her brother r charles F waa was married marled r to martha browning in the spring I 1 of f 1850 1856 tier list husband responded to a call to go on a mission to the indiana indians among whom he labored for two years during daring this time ehe she burled her eldest boy little clifton andehn also gave birth to her second child william 8 S on march 1864 she she burled one of other bar boys little wlllie willie 11 nov 1884 her mother died and february 15 1889 her father died in february 1887 she rho underwent a surgical operation in which she had a cancer taken out of her tight right breast creast by dr J M 31 benedict at silt salt like city but about a year before her tier death the dreadful disease malo matto its appearance again another cancer formed near the right arm pit which partially stopped the circulation of the blood iu in her arat arm canting causing it U to swell and inflicting terrible pain during the last six air mouths months of her tier blot she was prostrated upon bei bet back in which position she lay continually being unable to turn tura either to the right or to the left but she bore her tier eare sare affliction auli clion with the greatest patience and fortitude bhe she leaves behind to mourn her losi an affectionate husband eight children four boys bota and four girla she has also had eight grand children seven of whom survive her she likewise leaves ono one brother charles F middleton who is tho the last of the family to which they belonged |
