The people are getting very impatient with the mayor and council bccaure of the fact that they draw their increased salaries and have done eo from the t ry beginning of their terms but can do nothing for the city. There was no loss of time in passing the advanced salary ordinance. That was done with surprising promptness, and that was the only act performed by the "reform" mayor and oouncilmen with anything like alacrity exoept that other brilliant act of paying half the $5,000 discount on the 1100,000 Ixmds, when but the money had been received. But people are entitled to more many are clamoring for it, but will be done this year. It is now September and it seems almost too late to begin. An administration with energy could complete work on a dis trict of considerable size, but the pres ent set of siderial "reformers" will probably be unable to decide what they ought to do before snow Hies again. Not a sidewalk is to be built this year it seems. The primitive walks duet and sand now. mire in wet weathe- rmust prevail as in a country village right in the principal streets. That is "reform" for you. Not a street is to be graded in the central parts of the city, needed repairs are not to be made in many places, weeds grow up at leisure, and water id ditches runs where it will, while the "reform" mayor draws liTo every month and the reform councilmen tonW Dull W16.G6 out oi ldo weauury in me same uuit. Here is a r opportunity to get all tie practical knowledge ueoee&ary in ordinary work. And it is given lnKt without price to many. The most humble can have the same benefits as the rich. Public schools are the defense i the pour. They are easily a Seimse to the rich. TLey are the life of the Republic. Every guol citizen should make the most of them. Ogden's schools start this year ready to move off very much more smoothly than last year. The teachers have generally had experience. There is a ootumon system. There are better buildings and more of them but Dot near enough yet. The children have been better graded and will begin w ith an improved classification. In brief, the public schools promise to be very prosperous and raluable this year and the attendance should be large and regular. ke cLil-dre- " Ou Mua.Ui Cue W or tAll rtiiari belcg in H iveLtorhood of 3 per estt ia both istfioe. Fourth You ought not to pay your subscription anyway. It perhaps does Dot amount to more than a dollar or two and that amount of money would do us but little good. Of course if 500 persons owing us this amount would com in and pay up w might declar a dividend but don't let this trouble you. The other 499 will settle of course, and then what you owe will not be missed. Fifth Newspapers are always rich and don't need money. It is true that they do all in their power to build up the city in which they are published; they speak a good word for you when you embark in some enterprise and condone witb you when you fail in business; they congratulate you when fate smiles upon you, and speak comforting words in the hour when you are bowed down with sorrow; but then, that's their regular business, and they do not deserve any special commendation. In conclusion, let us say again, if you owe us anything on subscription don't pay it Paying subscriptions ia a bad habit for you to get into. Just let it go and when you shuffle off this mortal coil we will that you are provided with a palm-lea- f fan and our blessing. "The tttj ltdr7." JoLa Russell's comedians, came'y; Willi P.
