It was learned today that the young Kan vaa Russell Brown, aoa of J. A. Brown, member of the Missouri State Democratic Committee, and one of the wealthiest men in St. Louia county. Russell Brown waa the principal in one of the most horrible tragedies in the criminal annala of St Louia. In December, lSefi; he strangled bia grandmother, Mr. Gen. Durris to death. Gen. Dorria had amassed an immense fortune in the alare trade and bad erected one of the rlnest mansions in the oantrj on the western suburbs of this city. In this residence in the Utter part of 18&1 bred his widow and her twodaugh-tera- , one of them the mother of Russell Brown, who bad been divorced from her husband. One evening young Brown and a boon companion named McGlenn were taking in the saloons around town when Brown suggested to go out to his grandmother 'a and "raise a stake. " They went out the mansion ahere Russell was a weloome visitor. He left McGlenn outside, went and talked a few momenta to bia mother, and then passed on up stairs where his grandmother lay sleeping. The supposition has always been that he entered the old lady's room to steal ber jewelry, which he bad done before and pawned. She awoke, tried to prevent him, and was strangled to death. No alarm waa given. The family did everything to prevent the facts being made public, but it got out, and Brown waa arrested, allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter and sent to the penitentiary for ten years. Three years ago he escaped and went to Canada, where bia relatives has since kept bim, supplying him liberally with money.
