The People vs. Charles Turner; on motion of Charles C. Dey ah oritur was istiiied to nulxvmi witnesses at the expense of the people. United States vs. Andrew Callaghan; he listened to the indictment charging him with unlawful cohabitation and in a strong voice pleaded not guilty. JIa declared himself ready for trial and the cose was set for Dec J3d. Henry Oland was arruignetl on the charge ot larceny. His attorney, F. S. Sehoonovor, announced that Henry would plead guilty, but wished to muke a few statements. Henry is not prepossessing ia genoral appearance but was skillful enough in the talk he m:ule to the court He in only sixteen, had come from Michigan a Bhort time ago; had worked at FleaKaut Valley Junction, and then come to Ogilen, whore he met n very plausible colored gentleman, who offered to take him in on the ground Uoor i a little deal in cigars, which, by the way, were the property, or had been the property, of a cigar street. Henry dealer ou Twenty-fiftwas to sell the cigars, of which there were several boxes. The plausible gentleman, however, slipped out of the way on the appearance of the police, leaving young Henry to be arrested with the stolen goods in his possession. He was very penitent, and in proof thereof shed numerous tears. The court did not appear to be visibly affected thereby, but evidently thought Henry too young for the choice collection of criminals cooped up in the territorial prison and so committed the lad to the reform school. The jury in the case of Ed. McCaffrey returned a verdict of guilty, and the court sentenced him to seven years in the penitentiary. The most important cape of the day was the trial ot George House on the charge ot larceny. His attorney was J. M. White. The following jury was J. H. Phillips, Mark mpaneled: Thomas Sewall, Fletcher, Edward William Frazier, George Stetson, Sewell. Andrew Rose, M. G. Van Dyke, Fred Massa, B. C. Walton, J. M. Phillips and John McManus. Prosecuting Attorney Evans called as witnesses Henry Vogus and Gus Vogue, proprietors of the 6aloon in which occurred the offense. House had abstracted some money and a watch from the pockets of a friend, George Brown, while the latter was lying drunk in the rear of the saloon. He was arrested the next day and the His recovered. valuables plea his friend had told was that him to take care of him while he was drunk and to look after his valuables. "This was substantiated by the other witnesses. The jury thought that view of the case very reasonable and returned a verdict of not guilty. The last caso was that of James Siglar, who was charged with attempting to burglarize a room in the Wahsateh, occupied by a sheep man named Tabor. Mr. Tabor awoke one night from peaceful slumbers to find his pantaloons slip-mout from under tho pillow. He discovered that Mr. Siglar was trying to purloin them. He objected, not so much on account of the intrinsio value of tho pantaloons, ns because of the $214 in the pockets. He loved not tho pants the less but the money more. Mr. Tabor is au eldarly man but he grasped his visitor by the throat and in "strong language" askod what he was doing. Sigler explained that he was mistaken in the room, and later tried to act drunk. The jury thought tho plea insufficient and returned a verdict of guilty. The court sent Sigler to the penitentiary for one year. The court then adjourned for the day. It is taken from a body of French infantry, deriving its name from a tribe of Kaby-le- s in Algeria, whose lighting men have b?en noted througout North Africa for generations. In the Crimean war the zouaves were the elite of the French infantry, and their exhibitions were something marvelous. Twelve cadets have been picked from the Ogden Military academy, and their production of there difficult and rapid movements is excellent. They have a clock-worregularity of action, both in marching and in manual of arms indeed they already fully equal the Louiniana riflemen in the drill at the carnival. These zouaves are to close the program of a con-cafor the beuelit or a public library for Ogden, to be held in the G rand Opera house on tho evening of k rt January 1, 1891.
