The director of the Chamber of Com mere finally met the Keed town Bite company last night and compromised on the ground" staled by each aide aa given in the reports published in the local The townaite men represented that they would pursue a fair, enterprising, liberal policy in managing the Middle Fork aite. And with that understand lag the Chamber directory agreed to ex tend an individual support, but did not officially endorse the site company nor consent to be so identified with its oper ations. The site company's terms are set out in part in its statement in this paper II claims also that it can and will do more for the town than will be done other wise, because it is willing to spend mo- -an the project and has such a purjtot - . heart It offers to give the proceeds of 300 of the 700 lots to the town fund of Middle Fork. It has arranged for an excellent water supply. It will grade streets and will make other improvements. They found there were 5W ldges in the state. Of these OUS been, not aafeiy constructed and ha or will be, repaired at the inatanoa of the commission. In case of several bridges that gave way it was found that they were strained beyond the breaking power and in some instances the wonder was they did not go down sooner. It was found that the men who con structed those bridges could not calcu late the strain at all and merely want it blind, or as ordinary mechanic. Rod and timbers were found to be bearing weigh ts far too dangerous, borne suspension rods were made to carry 20,000 pounds to the square inch, or even more. The commission adopted a rule that rods shall not be made to bear over 10,000 pounds to the square inch and wood not over 900 pounds in tension The lesson of this is, of course, that about the same proportion of truss bridges here and everywhere are also imporperly constructed and need investigation. Otherwise bridge horrors will go on, like the rejent affair in Switzerland. The French own the roads there, mainly, and have allowed them to run down so as to save the expense ac count They seem indifferent to the expense account of life and limb.
