"tierc conflict that tear the breast of many noble and devout Presbyterians at the present time." It also refers to the death of Dr. Van Dyke and Judge Breckearidge as the immediate result of what the newspapers represent as "the excitement of the hour." Allow me, as one who was present in the General Assembly of our church, during all the discussion, and at the final vote, to say that there was no such tempest of feeling as the publio seems to have concluded. I never listened to a more calm, deliberate, a more kind discussion. There were no epithets, no appeals to passion or prejudice. The simple question before the Assembly was whether that body would approve of Dr. Briggs as a suitable person to instruct our young men for the University. his of The question orthodoxy borne not was the question. he of the newsDSDers thought was on trial before the assembly; and when the vote was taken they asserted that he had been condemned as a minis ter. This was not true. The action of the assembly had no reference to his ministerial standing, but simply) his professional standing; not as a minister, but as 8 theological teacher was his case con sidered. The simple fact was that Dr. to had given utterance Briggs s about views which and of the assembly probably an eoual Drooortion of the chureh thought were contrary to our system of doctrines as a church. A very small number, and they voted to retain him as teacher, consented that his views were a little strained; but said that we did not understand the learned professor. In either view, whether he was unsound or had failed to make himself understood, it was argued that he was not a competent teacher. If those who wished to retain him could not understand, and the large majority understood him incorrectly, certainly there was nothing else to do but say that he was not a suitable person to teach inez perienoed young men.
