J anet was a beautiful girl, graceful and well bred, and the Se&tons fancied her; and the judge, being a remote relative of her mother, felt it a kind of duty to look after Janet a little and to do what he reasonably could for her. "Twill do the child good," he explained to his wife, "and no one knows what a pretty girl may accomplish in the run of a Long Branch Beacon." Mrs. Seaton elevated her delicate brows in well bred surprise, but she was too amiable and ladylike to raise any objection to her husband's will, so the matter was settled. On the very Hfternoon before their departure, while Janet was parking her crisp muslins and her one silk, an old camphorwood box arrived. Captain of the brig Nautilus, brought it down. He had just got into port, and had spoken with the White Swan on his homeward voyage. Jack Hilliard was first mate on the Swan, and sent the old, sweet scented chest as a present to Janet They were not formally engaged, but they had been lovers ever since childhood, and Janet wore Jack's plain gold ring on her engagement finger. Jack never forgot her, and now he had sent the camphorwood box over the seas as a birthday present But Janet was too much excited, too full of her trip to Long Branch to notice it She went on with her packing, and when Tom Seaton, the judge's handsome son, drove down to take her over to the Cedars, she hurried off, not even pausing to bestow a glance npon the queer old box. When Janet had fairly gone the old farmer shouldered it and carried it up to her chamber. "Ah, my girl," he muttered, "ye'll be glad enough to come home to Jack's box by and by this sudden fever '11 soon burn itself out." Janet found her sojourn at Long Branch perfectly entrancing; the gay company, the balls, the music, aud, more than all else, Tom Seaton's constant and flattering devotion, bewildered her brain and silenced both conscience and common sense. From Long Branch the judge's party went to the mountains, and one hazy September afternoon Janet found herself all alone with Tom Seaton in one of the most romantic haunts of the Cats-kill"What in the world makes you wear this old fashioned ring, Janet? Is it a love gift or anything of the kind?" "No," replied Janet, coloring with embarrassment "Then let me take it off and put something prettier in its place." Janet was too weak, too fond of his flattery to resist, but a sharp pain pierced her heart as he drew the plain gold band from her finger and put a costly diamond in its place. "Now, that's something like," he said. STEAM, AND 3 Su-t- s. PLUMBING, lr. a Wirt gnat, Ut ub Jul ljtb, anca.4I Caa t) LL Cllf CCt. aJ a atrip it tiKt. exj ,.4 O, Jri V.tLr wiii;.. Then, Bitticg beside him in the firelight, she heard the story of his miraculous escape from death, and in turn told the story of her own folly and unfaithfulness. But he only clasped her all the closer as he listened. And when the sprijig came and the blue birds sang the contents of the camphorwood box were brought to light, and the sheeny silk was fashioned into a bridal robe, and with the lustrous pearls amid her gold brown braids, Janet looked the loveliest bride that ever the sun shone on. Philadelphia Press. A Man Raises His Uat. When he bows to a lady or an elderly gentleman. When he is with a lady who bows to any person, even if the other is a total stranger to him. When he salutes a gentleman who ia in the company of ladies. When he is in the company of another gentleman who bows to a lady. When he is with a lady and meets a gentleman whom he knows. When he offers any civility to a lady who is a stranger to him. When he parts with a lady, after speaking to her, or after walking or driving with her, etc. In the elevator, where there are ladies, men may keep on their hats with perfect propriety. Nine out of every ten do, with good and sufficient reason. Elevators are draughty places and are public conveyances, though within doors. To raise the hut when a lady enters is becoming courtesy, but this is very different from standing with the hat off while an elevator mounts to the thirteenth floor. A hat when not on the head is in the way in an elevator. It is embarrassing to the occupants to feel that they may uuwittingly spoil a good hat by an unwary turn that knocks it in or makes havoc with the nap.
