Acbckn, Ala, Jan. 8. On the Texas bound train which pawed through this place today was a couple with a romantio history. At the age of 15 Miss Octavia Jones was courted by Edward Morrison, a widower of 35 who lived near Columbus Oa. Owing to her extreme youth the girl's parent refused an assent to an engagement.' They stipulated that she must wait until she was 18. Morrison was the father of four children, for whom he had no one to care. He could not wait three years and married another. Hoping to the very moment that he pledged himself at the altar that A Woman something would intervene which would make it possible for him to marry Miss Jones, he neither broke off his engagement with her nor acquainted her with his second marriage, and the first she knew of it was the announcement published In the Montgomery newspapers. This was ten years ago, and since then they never met until three weeks ago at the residence ofj a mutual friend in Opelika, Ala. Neither knew that the other was to be there. Miss Jones had married a worthy young man from Dale county and was the mother of one child. Morrison's second wife had died. The meeting was most cordial on the part of his old love, much to the surprise of Morrison. The woman's old love sprang into existence at ; the sight of Morrison. "Why did you treat me so?" she asked. "If I had never met you until in the next world, I would have asked you the question there." Morrison told his story, and it was not long before the husband learned of his wife's infatuation for her old lover. He told her that he did not want unwilling allegiance; that if her heart was set on Morrison all he asked of them was that they should go Way far enough never to cross his path again. The proposition was agreed to, and they started for Texas, where under a changed name they still live. Morrison's children were all in the party. Editor Commercial: A patron of the public schools desires to express a preference for the system of hours in use in certain eastern schools above that of !. Ogden'a system. In the schools referred to the morning session begins at 9:30 and continues without intermission till 12 m. The afternoon session opens at quarter to 2 o'clock and continues without recess until closed for the day at 4 p. ra. Five and three quarters solid hours for work are afforded against the five hours and thirty live minutes of our system. No great gain in time it would seem, minutes nominally albut twenty-fiv- e lowed for recess does not cover the time lost, as used in the best of disciplined schools. The advantages of the first system are obviouB, particularly to those who have seen it at work. The hours are more convenient. Pupils may be of more use at home and the percentage of tardiness lessened through the winter month". The noon intermission is sufficiently long to permit pupils to eat at home in most cases, with no unhealthful haste. The wear and tear upon the school building and teacher's nerves-occ- urs largely at the time of the entrance and "settling down" of the school. intermission To omit the reduces the waste, accidents and injuries received in the rough sports incident to largo numbers upon a common playground. Experienced teachers say that more and better work is done in the school room where a recess is not sunerea W breaH up, and for a Bhort space, demor i alize the routine of study. The time is long enough, but not too long, to permit a concentration of the student's efforts ; With correspondingly r good results.-- y. )i f "'...
