Scheme Condemned Severely-ThHauler Bar Will Art-K t ion. UikN an i plana e Dan The aieeticg to discuss the clouding of title met at the District Court roojj lust night. It was largely atteneded, in fact the room was crowded. Mr. R. IL Whipple was elected chairman and Mr. A. J. Smith secretary. Mr. Whipple explained what had been done in tiling up the title matter. Ha said he had not called the meeting but understood its purpose w as to express the sentiments of the community in relation to the scheme of clouding titles. He said that the most of those who paid for title were sorry they had done 6o. Those who refused to pay were dissatisfied of course, lie concluded by conceding that there was just cause fur isidiCDatioo but he urged that no hasty, ra-sact should be proponed aud that no inrlniua'ory talk be indulged in. V. H. Harvey was called out. He said he did not come to speak, but was not afraid to. He desired to say that this business cannot be condemned too severely, aud if further continued would an irreparable injury. He did dj Ogden not believe that Hudson was most to blame, but his name was used without his consent while away. If the power behind the throne were removed he would quit claim to everybody. A voice "Who is the other fellow?" Harvey You all kno- who he is. Mrs. Hudson is very sick over the matter and he counseled no precipitate doings. Chairman Whipple corroborated what Mr. Harvey had said as to Hudson's connection with the affair. Fred Shiells was called out. He explained how he got his deed. He said he could suggest the power behind the throne. He read a discription of a fraud showing up a person of much gall and low spiritual development. It was very schorchiug and suggestive and was frequently applauded. He wound up by saying that the only way to remove the blot from Ogden's name would be to have that money returned to those who hours paid it or give them twenty-fou- r to leave the town Continued applause. was called upon. He . L. H. KogerB said he did not come to make a speech. He said a meeting of the bar had been cal'.ed to determine the legal and moral merits of what Rhodes and Hudson had done. As a fellow lawyer and a friend to fairness he had informed them of the proposed bar investigation, and had told them he would act as counsel for them without charge if need be. I5ut he would assure 'the meeting is he had done the accused, that they should have a full and fair hearing and that both the legal id moral phases of the ca?e would ba carefully looked into. If the men are found to be guilty as reported, they will lje dealt with so as to free the profession of their connection with it, and if they shall prove to be innocent the bar will give a correct explanation of the case to the public. As to Hudson's innocent connection with the matter, it may be true that he is not at the bottom of it but he has had a chance to clear himself anil has failed to do so. He cannot mantle himself by hying it on toothers as long as his acts are practically theirs. Don Maguire was called out. He said he had been very indignant at first but had tried to take his crow with as much christian charity as possible. He would eav that Hudson and Kh des had been well talked to already. But he thought there had been a conspiracy, vith other parties in the deal, and he thought he would soon know who they all are. He thought the other felkms in the conspiracy should be treated in the a iiue way as the men named. He thought there were obout five of them altogether. He would in no event use violence in this case, but if another such a trick were ever attempted in Ogden he might not be so charitable. The thing to do is to so handle the matter that no other man will ever attempt to do this sort of thing again in this place. Ap nlause.l K. M. Allison was called out and said that he was loth to speak on the subject, as a fellow attorney with the accused, If the statements made were true it is a very serious matter. He had heard that the report of this clouded title had already had a bad effect in the east as to Ogden. lie felt that if Mr. Hudson were innocent as stated he could not ex cuse himself by claiming there is a He should power behind the throne. have washed his hands of the matter at once. Otherwise he is culpable. Mr. Allisons address was very cool and and some temperate, one taking the the cue of good effect of his speech moved to adjourn. The motion was carried and those present went out quietly. It had been intended to pass resolutions, but those who called the meeting failed to have them ready and this part of the program was cut off by the sudden adjournment, Daniel Hanier Explains.
