V will leav a of description th lake to a future I letter. Soma four mil up th valley a spur of th Wasatch rang ertendsaome two mile out into th valley. In rounding thia spur th road run directly north toward another spur om mile away, th two forming th two horn of a nw moon. In th Low I of thia figurative moon lie th city of Ogden, claimed, by it resident, to Le the prospective metropolis of northern- Utah. The city was founded in 1849 by Lorin Fair, an apostle of Brigham Young, who till reside in th city and who has been on of its pillars for nearly half a century. Tha Mormon had complete control of th town until om two year ago when a few Gentiles, a all who are cot Mormon are called, ventured in with sufficient means to attract other and soon th city experienced a genuine western boom. Until this time the population did not exceed 6,000 to 8,000, while it is now reckoned at 18,000 to 22,000. And now, how will I describe it? Alighting from the train at the substantial, commodious and, I may aay elegant, union depot one is confronted at once with th view of a range of mounn tain extending like a around the city, with seemingly scarce room enough between tb depot and the mountain for a good sized jotato patch. After a few minute spent in viewing the mountains, which rise to some an or eight thousand feet above the city, we tart up through th city directly eastward, expecting to reach the mountains in a walk of half a mile. W walk a mile and the mountain seem no nearer. We then ask tha distance and are told that it is three miles to the foot and that th city extend all the way. It take us but a moment then to decide that we will not go to the mountain at present The street of Ogden are broad and smooth and lined on both sides with old trees, tome of which, at least, bav attained a diameter of from two to three feet, and whose limbs almost meet serosa the street J ust east of the city the Ogden river comes out of the mountains clear and cold and from which the water supply is obtained for the city. By dike, ditches and tramways the water ia conveyed around the city and allowed to flow down through the streets so that almost every street leading westward' from the mountain has a living stream running through its entire length.' This constant washing of the streets has much to do with the reputation of the city as a health resort Ogden is becoming quite a railroad center, the Union Pacific having just removed its headquarters here from Salt The Union Pacific, Central PaLake. cific and Southern Pacific all terminate here, besides the Utah Northern and the Rio Grande Western or Santa Fe. The Pacific Short Line from Sioux City is also headed for Ogden. There is no question but what the mountains all about Ogden are filled with mineral wealth and in the near future will prove a mine of wealth for the city. North, south and west of the city is a plain varying in width from twenty to thirty miles which is proving a veritable Garden of Eden to the agricund Grains, vegetables lturist fruits are produced in abundance. Great herds of cattle and sheep-- also adorn the valley and the foothills. The temperature of the climate about Ogden does not vary much from that of Wahoo, but it is so much drier that neither cold or heat effects one so readily. The cool as the close proxnights are always imity of the snow capped Wasatch range insures a cool breeze whenever the sun drops behind the western range some forty miles away. The sun did not rise at Ogden until 8:30, or aboat that, on the mornings of February 11th and 12th, so you can Bee by consulting ; your almanac about how much later that would be than here, remembering that their time is one hour Blower than our time in eastern Nebraska. While in Ogden we met several Nebraska people, among them John Hodge, a carpenter, James Snowden Bnd two sons, father and brothers of Mrs. J. S. Wilde, all whom seemed to be doing well. We also met Col. E. M. Correll, of Governor General Thayer's staff, from Hebron, who is now editor of the Ogden Daily Commercial, one of the leading papers of the city. We also made the acquaintance of two other Nebraska men, Mr. H. C. Bi,elow, president of the Ogden State bank, and Mr. Hendershot, who is in the abstract business.
