Show Funeral Services for Joseph R. Jenson I ContinuM from pag? Onei In 1917 he joined the staff at USAC and coached basketball for one year before being assigned to Mather Field. Cal.. to teach athletics ath-letics for a short time during World War I. In 1919 he came back to the college and coached his team to a state title and second se-cond place in the Rocky Mountain conference. Tile following year he relinquished relin-quished his coaching duties to devote full time to his chosen field, physical education and the m-omotion of intramural sports for all students not just the stars. He continued his studies at University of Utah. University of Wisconsin. University of Chicago and at Columbia. He received his master of arts degree during a leave - of absence to study at Oregon University. I Coach Jenson developd the USAC physical education department depart-ment into one of the leading departments de-partments of its kind in the nation na-tion and the college now boasts one of the largest intramural departments de-partments of any institution of similar size in the nation. One of the few men to teach -athletics and physical development develop-ment during both1 wars, Coach Jenson was instrumental in es- . tablishing a physical program ior several hundred ASTP and army ari forces students who have been stationed at the college. Active in Logan civic circles, he was a member of the Logan chamber of commerce, past member mem-ber of the Logan Kiwanis club and a member of Sigma Chi social fraternity. A resident of the Fourth ward, he also was a member of the Cache Stake Seventy quorum. He married Stella Merrill ol Richmond June 2, 1909 in the Salt Lake Temple. Survivors include in-clude his widow, two sons, Private Pri-vate First Class Joseph Richard Jenson, who was a prisoner of war in the Philippines for two years before he escaped recently and now is stationd at Camp Tracy, California, and Robert ; Wood Jenson, a student at 1 USAC, and one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Erickson of Logan. |
