Show TWO CACHEY0U1HS ARE CASUALTIES Smithfield Airman Dies In European Combat Staff Sergeant Noel L. Hillyard. 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Truman Hillyard, gunner on a Flying Fortress, Fort-ress, was killed January 11, 1944 during a combat mision over Germany, Ger-many, his parents learned Satur. day. Previously he was reported missing in action. He was born July 1, 1922 in Smithfield. a son of Truman R. and Lizzie Lewis Hillyard, was educated in Cache county public schools and enlisted in the air corps in October, 1942. Sergeant Hillyard went overseas November 1, 1943 and had participated partic-ipated in several missions over Germany before his aircraft was , shot down. i A brother, Lieutenant Owen T. Hillyard, 27, pilot of a P-38 fighter plane, also has been reported as missing since July 19, 1944 over Holland. Survivors include his father, a stepmother, one sister, Mrs. Lorraine Lor-raine Hillyard Harrison, Pocatello, Idaho, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lewis. Logan. Sl6 John Le Roy Carlson, 19, only son of Dr. and Mrs. John W. Carlson, 87 North 5th East, Logan, died Monday night at the Great Lakes Naval Training sta. tion hospital of rheumatic fever. He had been seriously ill one week. He was born June 17, 1926 at i Fort Duchesne, a son of Dr. John j W. and Ina Sorensen Carlson. His father is associate agronomist for the U. S. department of agriculture agricul-ture at Utah State Agricultural college. He was educated in Logan schools and studied one year at USAC before entering the navy June 25, 1944. He trained at Farragut, Idaho and then was assigned to Treasure Island, Cal., for a radio course. He became ill while enroute from California to Great Lakes. Mr. Carlson was a member of the L.D.S. church. Survivors include his parents and. three sisters: Virginia Carlson, Carl-son, of Pasadena, Cal., Lorraine and Nancy Carlson, of Logan, and two grandmothers, Mrs. Catherine Cather-ine Sorensen and Mrs. John A. Carlson, of Logan. The body will be returned to Logan for funeral services and : burial. |
