An event to remember Editor: Last week's (Sept. 6) dedication of the Miner's Hospital as the new Park City Library was the perfect culmination culmina-tion of two years of planning and dreaming. So many people worked so hard to make sure that the day was an event to remember. Thanks go to architect Wally Cooper, contractor Chris Matthews, designer Dixie Kincaid, Park City planner Jennifer Harrington, Rosemary Kell and Park City Community Development Develop-ment Director Mike Vance, who worked 'round the clock to make sure that everything was ready for opening day. Nan McPolin organized our tour guides who were gracious hostesses throughout the day. They included Edna Fisher, Judy Elkins, Judy Oar, Marge Angeli and Emma Morgan. Thank you all! Help was offered throughout the day by the Park City Police Department, Park City Fire District, Park City Public Works Department and Park City Recreation Department. The Elder's Quorum of the LDS Church brought and set up all of the chairs and Bob Theobold, Blair Feulner and Bill Bertagnole set up the sound system. Mel Fletcher let us borrow Blanche's music stand. We are grateful to all of you. Each speaker helped to explain the history of the project and added their own special touch to the ceremony. Thank you to Mayor Jack Green, Utah Library Director Russell Davis and librarian Violet Terry who spoke in addition to members of the Park City Library Board. A special thank you to Governor Scott Matheson who interrupted inter-rupted his Labor Day vacation to be with us. The Friends of the Library have been involved with the project from the beginning. On dedication day, Val Chin, Ute Ruzicka, Judy Elkins, Francine Valline and President Mar-lene Mar-lene Ligare greeted guests and sold bookmarks and Miner's Hospital charms. The charms were designed by Dick Doty and displayed in a case made by Chris Geer. The historical display in the library entrance was arranged by Park City Historical Society members Suzanne Shellenberger and Tony Jay. The live mannequins were Jere Calmes, Sally Bolton, Amy Finegan, and Richard Scott. Historical items were loaned by Lagoon Pioneer Museum and Dr. Carl and Joyce Woolsey. Dr. Carl Woolsey Sr. and Donna Woolsey gave advice on authenticity. Mary Moore served as our beautifully-dressed historical guide. Pat McDowell, Nick Nass, Robin Valline and Mary Doughty 7 7 l I 1 f I !) Ik it. J ttDne HMiittnir worked overtime to frame all of the historical photos ther Judy Taylor collected. After the dedication, the Park City Historical Society and Friends of the Library led by Max Jarman, organized a reception at the Union Pacific Depot. Thanks to Ed Beaulieu for the use of the building, to all the Park City young people who helped set up and to Beneva Pratt for the food. The Holiday Inn gave tables and chairs, the "Caribou" band and the Park City Chamber Music Group supplied music and Lloyd Stevens played auctioneer. The Kimball Art Center generously gave electricity, water and tables. Special thanks go to Linda Mc-Reynolds, Mc-Reynolds, Susan Finegan, Jimmy Finegan and Jane Harrington. But most of all, thanks go to all of the people in Park City who supported the Miner's Hospital-Park City Library-from Library-from the beginning those who went to the polls and voted to pay for the project, those who showed up with sledge hammers on work days, those who passed books down the line in the book brigade, and those who stood with tears in their eyes and sang "America the Beautiful." This building is yours! Use it. Enjoy it. Be proud of it! Tina Lewis The Park City Library Board The Park City Library Staff Square dance a success Editor: The Park City Ski Team would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the square dance and cookout last Friday night a success. The U.S. Ski Team did a superb job or organizing the event. The professional manner in which the event was organized and presented was indicative of the many successful events that the U.S. Ski Team has been involved with before. It was nice of the team to ask for our involvement in this event. It was a pleasure for me to work with Nina Macheel and Kae Erikson during the preparation of the event. They both did a magnificent job of pulling everything together from Spanish dancers dan-cers to motivating the novice square dancers like myself to participate. There are always many people who make an event like this one a success and not everyone can be properly thanked or mentioned here. There are always key people and establishments who offer a great deal of support. This event like many other Ski Team events wouldn't be possible without the support sup-port of the Park City Ski Area (and the watchful eye of Phil Jones and Molly Laramie), the Cafe Ritz for their fine food, and the prize sponsors which include in-clude The Hat Store, Jan's, The Leather Shop, Wolfe's and the Alpine Slide. Thank you Park City Ski Team members who helped distribute flyers and sell tickets, and of course thanks goes to all who participated. The entire U.S. Ski Team staff put on a fine display of tight organization during the event with Inez Aimee heading up the volunteer crew and making sure everyone had a good time that evening. Thank you Don Gomes for the commentary com-mentary during the event. I would also like to thank those people who have contacted me and voiced their support and confidence that I will represent them in providing the best fire protection possible. Thanks, James H. White Desimone says thanks Editor: My thanks to those persons who supported me for Fire Commissioner in the primary election. Between now and the November runoff election, I would welcome a phone call (649-6805) from anyone who would like to discuss their ideas about the Fire District and fire protection. Sincerely, Vince Desimone Fire Commission candidate Alvarez says thanks Editor: We tried. We were able to get more Park City residents out to vote than had voted in previous primaries. That is an accomplishment even though there were not enough to override the heavy vote in the rest of Summit County. Thank you, all who voted for me. Thank you, all who worked on my campaign. Your time and energy showed your concern for a government more to your liking and your willingness to work for that goal. Matt Alvarez What are the rocks for? Editor: I live in the Prospector area of Park City and I am really upset about the road surface from the Holiday Inn down to Prospector (Hwy. 248). What are the rocks for? The surface does not at all work for me. It sounds like someone's good idea that didn't work. I have seen roads paved before and rocks were not necessary. Park Avenue is an example. (The latest Park Ave. resurfacing.) The planning of Hwy. 248 seems truly idiotic. I am not into road construction. I do not know how to build roads nor do I know the theory of high altitude construction of paved surfaces. All I know is whether a road works for me or not. Highway 248 does not work. If there is a reason for this type of construction, the knowing of which would change my mind or my beliefs, I want to hear it. Until then, the road is going to remain bumpy, have rocks piled on the sides of the road and I'm going to be upset. Park City roads have had a history of poor planning. Let's learn from this one and make roads work around Park City from now on. I would like a response in this column regarding this subject if anyone would like.
