Show Thursday, June 14, 1979 Page 13 eas Fop Better Livin Id By Dr. M. Ford McBride Timpanogos Community Mental Health Center How old does a child have to be to experience emotional problems? Several years ago experts thought that emotional disturoance onry showed up in children over eight years of age. Today, current research now shows the symptoms of emotional disturbances can be detected detect-ed in the infant and young child. What should parents look for if they have questions about their children's emotional health? When a normal child lags behind or departs too far from the norm in his social or emotional behavior, the problem may be an emotional or behavioral disturbance. Recent research indicates such problems "are often rooted iff the first few months of life, but not discovered before the age of two-and-one-half, three or even later. Often the family may think or be reassured by others that the child will just outgrow the problem or that their influence on the child has caused the problem. They are also afraid professionals will 'confirm their feelings of guilt about the situation. To improve the ability of all people to prevent or understand un-derstand emotional disturbance distur-bance in the very young, we need education in the areas of normal growth and development of children and the ways in which normal emotional processes can be upset. A child's environment environ-ment plays a unique and critical role in his emotional and social development. If you have a question or topic you would like Dr. McBride to discuss in his column, write: Dr. M. Ford McBride, 1161 East 300 North, Provo, Utah 84601. Cold Cash Stolen The Red Banjo was virtually vir-tually robbed of cold cash June 11, when $250 was stolen from the refrigerator of the Main Street restaurant. The robbers broke a window win-dow in the front door of the building and took $50 in cash from a bank deposit bag on the second shelf of the refrigerator, and $200 from a cigar box one shelf down. A closet also was rifled, but the intruders missed the $120 hidden there. The police said they have several good fingergprints they are currently trying to match to suspects. In other police action: Park City resident Dave Bodner was robbed of a $230 Pioneer FM cassette stereo from his car parked at 923 Park Avenue on June 8. Bodner said he was awake until 2 a.m. and did not hear anything unusual. The robbers loosened some screws then yanked the cassette deck from under the dashboard.
