Auth and Savage decided they could become the area's first, and began purchasing equipment equip-ment from east coast manufacturers. Savage said the equipment and techniques have remained relatively unchanged since the early beginnings of chimney sweeping, with the exception excep-tion of the addition of the modern "soot sweeper." Actual chimney sweeping is a messy business for the sweepers, but Savage reassures chimney owners that their homes will be absolutely soot free. After unloading various brushes and flexible rods from their truck, Auth clambers to the rooftop while Savage secures the front of the fireplace with a tarp. The vigorous scouring of the chimney has dislodged many things besides soot, including loose shingles under the feet and six dead birds caught in the flue. "We feel were performing a public service." Savage said, noting that most people are not aware of the danger posed by a soot-filled chimney. chim-ney.
