Show Page 13 Wednesday, September 20, 1978 Ideas For Better Living ByDr.M.FordMcBride Hmpanogos Community Mental Health Center Changing a child's bad behavior is not easy. Fortunately, For-tunately, most parents feel that if a child is not behaving the way he should, they have an obligation to help him change. Even though parents realize the importance of change, they usually wonder how they can be most effective. effec-tive. A behaviorial-change technique that I have found extremely important and grossly under used by parents is companionship. Companionship Com-panionship is taking time to genuinely share yourself with your child. When psychologists examine the interaction between parents and children they find excessive negative comments. Rarely does a child talk about how fun or fulfilling it is to spend time with his parents. Much of the face to face interaction in-teraction between children and their parents is filled with admonishments, criticism and complaints. Thus the child never learns to enjoy the companionship of his parents. A relationship of mutual enjoyment, pleasure and activity is never formed. Parents are often surprised at how easy another adult can influence their child simply by offering of-fering him some form of companionship. The legislation retains McKay's concept of a three-member three-member review board that could exempt species from coverage under the act yet combines an environmentalist-backed bill to make what McKay called a "weak sister"compromise. The bill includes components compon-ents of the one co-drafted by McKay and sponsored on the Fisheries, Wildlife and the Environment Subcommittee by Rep. David R. Bowen (D-Miss.), and the environmentalist environ-mentalist version sponsored A Public Service of This Newspaper Red Cross is counting on you by Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.). The subcommittee, to relieve re-lieve a deadlock between the reform and non-reform factions, fac-tions, Wednesday put together to-gether the compromise package. According to McKay, the four "reform" components are mandatory public hearings before final endangered designations; more flexible definitions of "species" and "critical habitat;" habi-tat;" a two-step review process for petitions to exempt federal projects from ESA, and mitigation of the impact on a species' environment once a project is granted an exemption.
